Getting Publications

Buying a Publication

Publications are available for purchase through the Zinio website. To go there, click the Zinio Newsstand button on the top toolbar, or go to www.zinio.com using your Web browser. At the Zinio site, select the items you'd like to buy, then follow the prompts through the order process.

Downloading a Publication

Once you've completed your purchase and installed Zinio Reader, Zinio Delivery Manager will automatically download your publications to your computer and place them in your Library. To view the publication(s) you've downloaded, click the Library button on the top toolbar. Your publications can also be found in your My Zinio Library folder under My Documents folder. If you've ordered a magazine subscription, Zinio will notify you by email when each new issue is available for download. Zinio Delivery Manager will also keep you posted.

When you are online, the Delivery Manager will periodically check the Zinio server and display a pop-up window on your desktop if it finds an available publication. You can then choose whether to download the publication right away or wait until later. To check for pending publications downloads any time, connect to the Internet, then click the Options button on the top toolbar in Zinio Reader and select Check for Publications from the menu that appears.

Opening a Publication

There are two ways you can open your publications:

Open the Zinio Reader and click the Library button on the top toolbar . You can also go to My Documents > My Zinio Library in Windows Explorer and double-click on the publication you'd like to read.

Double-click on the publication thumbnail (or row, if you're in the List view) to open the file.

Reading Publications

One Key Reading

With Zinio Reader 3, you can navigate an entire publication with just one key. While zooming, use the space bar to scroll your view down the page, and then turn to the next page. Page turns automatically occur as you reach the bottom right corner of the right-hand page.

Navigating Basics

Searching for Keywords
To search for text within a publication:

  1. Enter your search text in the Search field on the top toolbar, then click the arrow button next to the text field (or press Enter on your keyboard).

  2. In the Search Results window that appears, double-click the instance of your search term that you'd like to view. Zinio Reader will flip to the appropriate page. (You can also use the Previous or Next buttons in the Search Results window to navigate through your results one at a time.)

  3. To search across all publications available through Zinio, click Advanced Search at the bottom of the Search Results window. You can define specific publications or date ranges to search within.
Note: Search may not find your keyword if it is part of an image rather than the publication's text. Images are not searchable

Zooming In and Out

You can press Enter to toggle between standard Browse and Read magnification levels. Zinio Reader will automatically size the pages to fit the dimensions of your screen.

To get additional levels of magnification, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Zoom In button or Zoom Out button on the top toolbar. Your page will zoom in or out instantly.

  2. To zoom in even closer (or zoom out even farther), continue clicking the appropriate button.

Flipping Insert Cards

Insert cards (often promotional) are cards of varied sizes that can be flipped just like regular pages. To flip an insert card, move your mouse toward the outer edge of the card until the cursor's appearance changes to a page icon, then click.

Opening Gatefolds

Gatefolds are pages that fold out to be larger than a regular page. They can be flipped just like other pages.

To open a gatefold, move your mouse toward the inside edge of the page until the cursor's appearance changes to a page icon, then click.

Playing Rich Media Content

Zinio Reader supports a variety of rich media content (including audio, video, and animations), bringing enhanced interactivity to ads and editorial content. Some media elements are designed to play automatically, while others play only upon command.

When you come to a page containing manual-play media, an audio or video icon will flash three times to alert you, then disappear. The icon will reappear if you mouse over the media, or return to the page.

To play any media, simply click on the audio or video icon that appears. Depending on the media type, you may find that keyboard and mouse-click behavior is altered while it is playing.

To stop the media from playing, turn the page.

Note: To change media options, see Disabling the Media Auto-Play Feature and Hiding Media Indicators.
