Even if you can’t hop on a plane, you can channel the tropics in the kitchen—and safeguard your immune system. Eating vitamin C-rich foods every day is one of the best strategies to keep our immune system healthy. A meta-analysis of 31 studies suggests 1,000 milligrams daily of vitamin C at the onset of cold symptoms may shorten the duration of a cold. (The thinking is that vitamin C may help our B and T cells proliferate, which helps eliminate harmful pathogens.) It’s recommended that men and women get 90 milligrams and 75 milligrams daily, respectively.
