When I look over this issue of American Art Collector, the Wone thing that strikes me more than ever is the quality of the galleries who are participating in this issue. It is literally a who’s who of the top galleries across the country focusing on contemporary painting, largely in the realist tradition. Who are these galleries? Well take a look at the magazine: Arcadia Contemporary, RJD Gallery, Lotton Gallery, Rehs Contemporary, Meyer Gallery, Vose Galleries, EVOKE Contemporary, Blue Rain Gallery, Selby Fleetwood Gallery, Maxwell Alexander Gallery, Cavalier Galleries, Principle Gallery, Robert Lange Studios, Nüart Gallery, Haynes Galleries, Haven Gallery, Pippin Contemporary, John Carroll Doyle Art Gallery, Stafford Gallery. Like we said, it literally doesn’t get any better than this. And, add last issue with galleries such as Hirschl &…

kehinde wiley at santa barbara museum of art

A major work by internationally renowned artist Kehinde Wiley will be on view at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art through October 13. The piece, titled Equestrian Portrait of Prince Tommaso of Savoy-Carignan, spans over 9 feet and features a man in contemporary garb on horseback with a background of bright florals. An extension of the artist’s Rumors of War series, Equestrian Portrait was fashioned after an early-17-century painting by Dutch master Anthony van Dyck. For this series, and in much of his work, Wiley’s subjects come from his meetings with young black men on the street, primarily in New York. During this process, he invites the individuals to his studio, asks them to choose a painting from art history textbooks, photographs them in that pose—in their own clothing—and then…

artistic visions

1 Linden Frederick, American Bandstand, oil on panel, 12¼ x 12¼"In 2017, Linden Frederick mounted his solo exhibition Night Stories at Forum Gallery in New York City. The show was a discourse between the paintings and the written word, as some of the country’s best writers were asked to write prose to accompany the 15 nocturnal landscapes. Novelist Ann Patchett, who wrote Bel Canto, was paired with Frederick’s painting Vacant. The painting will now be the centerpiece of a new exhibition at Haynes Galleries in Franklin, Tennessee, along with some of his other nocturnes.Along with Frederick’s paintings, the show will present pieces by some of today’s leading contemporary artists. Guest artists include Alan Feltus, Alan Magee, Alyssa Monks, Guillermo Muñoz Vera, Brian Rutenberg, Tula Telfair and Jesus Villarreal. The show,…
