a time of plenty

SHOOTING SPORTS have been through some turbulent times this year, but I think it is now time to focus on the positives, and what better time to do that than late summer. For those of us who shoot live quarry for pest control and the pot, it really is a season of plenty – an opportunity to make some great mixed bags and fill the freezer. On arable farms, wheat and barley crops have mostly been harvested, and it will soon be time for maize. There should be some great sport to be had over the stubbles, helping to keep down pigeon numbers in readiness for the autumn seed drills, which will be here before we know it. This issue’s Countryman feature follows me on a recent session on the stubbles,…

orange is the new black

First focal plane scopes, just like bullpups, are very much in vogue at the moment, and the latest Compact models from Discovery are physically smaller – and cheaper – than any FFP this company has done before. The one seen here is the 4-16x44 model, which measures just 270mm and has an RRP of £229.99, but there’s a 3-12x44 model as well which comes in at 254mm, weighs 500 grams and costs £219.99. Because of their small size, these little telescopic sights would work well on bullpups, carbines or any small rifle. While most scope manufacturers like to keep their optics a neutral black colour, Discovery isn’t afraid to shout out loud about its products by using a few less-than-covert colour choices, some of which have been a bit gaudy for our…

news in brief quick shots...

SEEING THE LIGHT It won’t be long before the evenings start to draw in, meaning more night-time shooting – and the need for a decent light, such as the Fenix HM65R headlamp. This lightweight torch features a 1000 lumen spot beam which reaches out to 163 metres and has a soft, even floodlight of up to 400 lumens for closer work. It runs on a rechargeable battery. It’s easy to swap to a spare for immediate use, or it can be recharged on board via the supplied USB-C type cable. It’s tough enough for field use as it’s two-metre drop-resistant, dustproof and waterproof to two metres for 30 minutes. The Fenix HM65R Rechargeable Headlamp retails for £99.95. For more details contact My Fenix (The Photon Shop) on 02921 157162 or visit www.myfenix.co.uk. DON’T GET IN…

throw a javelin on your rifle

Spartan is releasing a Lite version of its Javelin bipod that’s been specially designed with airgun shooters in mind. Due to the low bipod mounting location under the air cylinder of a PCP, it can sometimes be difficult to obtain good rifle alignment and a comfortable shooting position with a full-size bipod. The Lite gets round this by offering a choice of three different leg lengths. The Standard leg offers a height of 14.5cm (5.7”), while the Long is 17.5cm (6.8”) and the Short measures just 11.5cm (4.5”). These new single-section legs can be quickly fitted or removed from the bipod head. Using Spartan’s Magnetic Attachment System, the entire bipod can be instantly attached to or detached from the rifle, using one of the rifle adapter options. It offers a locking cant…

gear up – whatever the weather

The UK weather is notoriously unpredictable at this time of year, but the Gomati XTR Pants from Pentagon will keep you covered both in and out of the shooting field. These trousers have been designed to be strong enough for demanding outdoor activities such as shooting, while remaining stylish enough for casual use. The articulated knee construction maximises mobility in different positions, and the reinforced knees and seat mean extra durability. And if your hunting session turns into a spot of warm-weather plinking, you can unzip the legs and convert them into shorts. If the weather’s not playing so nicely, keep the trousers in their standard format and grab a Pentagon UTA Anorak to keep out the worst of the weather. The UTA features a quarter-zip front with an inner storm flap…
