welcome

It will come as no surprise to learn that the very nature of the bizarre year that has been 2020 has also influenced BMW’s typical schedule of new car launches and events. BMW UK recently held a press event over the course of a week at the fabulous Bicester Heritage in Oxfordshire. It was an opportunity for media types like ourselves to come along for the day to drive a whole bunch of new BMW and – if applicable – MINI models. As you’ll see from the shot below the hanger at the former RAF base was converted into BMW heaven for the course of the event, social distancing measures and buckets of sanitiser were employed to enable those who had missed all or some opportunities to drive BMWs this…

used bmw batteries get second life

BMW has announced a new partnership with Off Grid Energy to create a sustainable, second-life solution for BMW and MINI electric vehicle (EV) batteries. BMW will supply Off Grid Energy – market leaders in energy storage, with battery modules for it to adapt to create mobile power units. The partnerships gives old BMW and MINI EV batteries a useful second-life when they can no longer efficiently be used in cars, that is, of course, important for the environment. Graeme Grieve, CEO BMW Group UK, said “BMW Group will have 25 electrified models on the roads by 2023 – half of them fully electric. We are delighted to work with Off Grid Energy to find a sustainable way of continuing to use these valuable batteries, even after they have put in many…

new direction

The lure of owning a classic or modern classic BMW is pretty hard to resist. In the past the 2002 was the default period BMW after which classic car enthusiasts lusted, but as time has rolled ever onwards the E21 and E30 have, in many respects, taken up its mantle in modern times. Those searching for a classic BMW that is both fun and affordable these days are often drawn to the E30 for it strikes a rather happy medium between classic and modern motoring – that has resulted in good examples of the most desirable models rocketing in value. The E30 M3 might now be considered too expensive for the majority, but other versions of BMW’s iconic period 3 Series remain largely affordable. If you can’t have an E30…

aces high

The game of poker, to those who understand it, is the great leveller. Sure, on paper it sounds pretty dry – a card game firmly grounded in probability, in which the winner is determined by the combinations and ranks of the cards they hold… oh, but it’s so much more than that. Characterised by the inevitable betting which accompanies it, poker is best played in dark, smoky rooms by a cast of characters that counts among its number a shifty guy with an eye patch, a high-rolling Texan in a linen suit and Stetson, an East End wideboy, a jilted bride, and a variety of roustabouts who have nothing to lose but their rolls of twenties. It’s as much about reading one another’s tells and outmanoeuvring your opponents in a…
