A dark, cold night in February and a long drive north on the motorway hardly sounds like the backdrop most of us would paint for a great drive, but such things depend on the car. Always. ferrari 456 values bottom out

Back in 2015 when the market for newer Prancing Horses was at its height, Ferrari 456s jumped from the mid £30,000s all the way up to the dizzy £80,000s. A couple of tiny-mileage manual cars even broke the £100k barrier. They’ve fallen back now to more or less where they started. In February at Race Retro, Silverstone sold a ’96 six-speed UK-supplied 456 with 49k miles in Argenta Silver with Nero leather, ten services in the book, including three belt changes, for £39,100. That’s a very realistic price for a fine 456. 2013-on jaguar f-fype v6

You can now buy a Jaguar F-type V6 Coupé for £26,000. Bet you didn’t know that. Prices have eased mainly because of the F-type’s identity crisis. Is it a GT or a sports car? Is it meant to munch 1000 miles in a day or twist defiantly round back roads? Buyers have always scratched their heads over the F’s bipolar nature, hence the slowish sales of 10,000 units a year. But with sensible-mileage V6 Coupés available for around £30k, it’s an entertainingly quick, handsome and noisy Jag with enormous possibilities. Not forgetting it also came from the pencil of the Ian Callum, which in my book makes it a certified classic all day long. And yes, the 5.0 litre V8 is faster and more riotous but also more expensive in every department…
