the mood of the moment: thinking positive and making plans

When I’m mopping mud off the hallway floor for the umpteenth time or dabbing lotion onto the permanent patch of windburn on my right cheek that makes me look like a bit of a wino, it’s hard to believe that spring days are around the corner. And then, all of a sudden, the churned-up quagmire behind the house starts to look like a lawn again and sunbeams reveal the full extent of my slatternly winter housekeeping regime, with dust and finger marks on every surface! Plans for decorating with happy colour (page 76), planting and growing (pages 84, 116 and 125), and cooking with fresh herbs (page 134) should see us all through the last, dark days of winter… P.S. natural beauty

Returning to the land that her father had once nurtured marked a life change for Georgina Fulton, and her husband Gareth and their two children. The family had recently moved back to the UK after living in Cyprus, so the flat, big-sky views of the Isle of Sheppey felt like a particularly wild landscape. ‘This is a relatively unknown part of Kent, but there’s a unique beauty to the place,’ says Georgina. When her father came to Elmley in the 1970s, he was in the business of arable and sheep farming, but the land was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the government. Georgina’s father embraced the change, positively encouraging wildlife to flourish and returning the arable land to extensive grazing for cattle. ‘He had quite a pioneering…

living the dream

What was your aim? ‘We wanted Elmley to appeal to people who love to escape into nature.’ How is Elmley unique? ‘It’s the only nature reserve where you can stay overnight. You can switch off, but know you’ll be snug and sleep well.’ What wildlife can be seen in spring? ‘Marvellous displays from the male birds, lapwing in particular, and the first chicks appear in April. You’ll sometimes see hares boxing, barn owls nest in the trees outside the kitchen window and you may spot seals in the Swale.’…
