go ahead. pamper yourself.

We consider it our patriotic duty to do the Indulgence Issue every November. After all, didn’t Thomas Jefferson write in the Declaration of Independence that every American has a right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”? That’s what we’re doing, starting on page 63: pursuing happiness. No worries—we’re not going to go all Marie Antoinette on you. We’ve just found some of the best (and yes, most self-indulgent) things to do around Denver: driving a 200-mph sportscar, having your own bespoke perfume made, smoking the most expensive cigar, having dinner catered at home…. Need more? We have two fancy home wine closets, plus visits to Colorado’s luxurious Home Ranch and the Four Seasons Private Island in the Maldives. We also pampered ourselves by spending a couple of days in the…

things we love

WE SIMPLY ADORE DIORIt is a truth universally acknowledged that French women have more style in their pinkies than all the rest of us women put together. Exactly what gives them that certain je ne sais quoi we don’t know, but it certainly helps that France was the birthplace, 72 years ago, of the House of Dior. Its namesake, Christian Dior, an art gallerist who became a famous haute couturier after World War II, made postwar women look feminine again. (Those masculine silhouettes of the previous five years? Mon dieu!) Suddenly, all of the jeunes filles were wearing wasp waists, fulsome busts, and rounded shoulders. (“I have designed flower women,” Dior famously said.) Now you can see 170 couture dresses (as well as accessories, drawings, runway videos, and other archival…

season’s greetings

(J.C. BUCK)One of Matt Bliss’s fondest memories of childhood is lying alongside his siblings looking up inside his grandpa’s plexiglass Christmas tree while his grandfather slowly rotated it. “It looked so amazing,” Bliss recalls, “like a kaleidoscope.” Today, kids around the world can get the same thrill, thanks to The Modern Christmas Tree, a hobby-turned-company that Bliss officially launched in 2011. Last year, the folks at Shark Tank reached out and asked Bliss to bring his trees to their Christmas show, where Barbara Corcoran invested $100,000 for 15 percent of the business. We asked him about bringing on the bling. How did your grandfather, Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker, come to create the original tree?“My grandfather had his own A-frame construction company called Delta Vacation Homes. He was always building things; whenever I…

your best life

Ideas, advice & inspiration for living rightEVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATEDWe love the Denver Botanic Gardens in the summer—but it’s just as colorful (and even more twinkly) during the holidays. For three decades, the garden has been bringing us the dazzling show BLOSSOMS OF LIGHT, which this year starts Nov. 23 (the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend) and runs until Jan. 1 (including Dec. 24, 25, and 31) at the York Street location. Enjoy interactive light displays (including sound-reactive lights), listen to carolers on select evenings, nibble on holiday treats, and sip toasty drinks. (Tip: Buy your tickets in advance; $16, adult nonmembers; $13, children ages 3 to 15.)botanicgardens.orgTOTALLY TUBULAR “No experience necessary”—those words are music to the ears of the few of us who are not big on skiing or boarding but…
