claus and effect

When my daughter, Caitlin, was born, four days before Christmas, the hospital video shows her wrapped snugly in a blanket—with the movie A Christmas Carol playing on a screen in the background. But, of course. It was crucial that we immediately immerse her in our family’s holiday traditions, including the annual viewing of that grainy black-and-white British classic (with the inimitable Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge). Such traditions (including my sister’s chocolate rumballs, each as potent as a martini, and the annual Christmas-morning family hike) are what the holiday season is all about. But the gifts are delightful, too—especially the giving. We had such fun “shopping” for this year’s holiday gift guide, which starts on page 67. It features an array of unusual hand-picked items from local makers and local stores,…

inside scoop EMILY TEATER Photographer What is the best present you have ever received? Our dog, Bear! When we were first dating, my husband surprised me with our dog. He came in a basket with a red blanket, and I will never forget the excitement of meeting him for the first time. What is your personal philosophy of gift giving? Personally I believe in “handmade or from the heart.” It does not have to be extravagant or expensive to be a good gift. Just as long as you put thought into it, it will be perfect. What are your favorite family holiday traditions? Every year I do an activity advent calendar with my kids. Each day they pull a card and it tells us what holiday-themed activity we will be doing that day. Most items are a way…

on the edge

The first time Eric Hegreness built a pair of skis, he blew it. “It was six years ago, and I was renting a space in someone’s barn for $10 a night and borrowing tools,” he says. “At two or three in the morning, I actually blew the power to the entire farm, and instead of stopping, I went and knocked on the door and said, ‘Can you help me get the power back on? I really want to finish this ski.’ I guess when you’re passionate about something, you make it happen.” And Hegreness, an Ohio native, had always been passionate about skiing—and Colorado. “I came out here when I was 12 for a wedding, and I told my parents, ‘As soon as I’m old enough, I’m moving to Colorado.’…
