1. ONE TO WATCH Last year, then 26-year-old South African designer Thebe Magugu made history as the first recipient of the industry’s coveted LVMH Prize to hail from Africa. Rather than relocate to one of the traditional fashion capitals, Magugu chose to stay put, instead championing local crafts in a bid to bolster the economy in a country where youth unemployment is nearly 60 percent. Last month marked the debut of his e-commerce site, which offers colorful wares worn by the likes of Issa Rae. Parka, $1,122, blouse, $532, shopper bags, $1,172, Thebe Magugu, thebemagugu.com. 2. STRING THEORY Spanish leather goods house Loewe has a long history of supporting artisans, both through its annual Craft Prize and the utilization of traditional Spanish crafts such as basket weaving (see the undisputed It Bag of…

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and with COVID, understandably, top of mind right now, we do not want to forget that breast cancer continues to be a reality that one in eight American women will experience. We have lost so many to this disease, including Kelly Preston, who was only 57 when she passed away this summer. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has funded breakthrough clinical studies that have saved countless lives. Our commitment to finding a cure needs to remain steadfast at this crucial moment. This issue delves into the personal stories of two incredibly strong women who are fighting Stage IV breast cancer. Actress Shannen Doherty says that when you have this diagnosis, people want to “put you out to pasture.” But, she says, “I’m not ready…

the female gaze

Maria Grazia Chiuri, the creative director of Dior, is looking at me from the sand-gray couch where she is calmly perched in a giant, airy studio in Paris. She’s dressed in jeans, a white blouse, and sandals, with her platinum hair pulled back; around her, everyone is moving. Stylists in face masks consult each other as they study photos on moodboards. Fit models walk down a makeshift catwalk. I try, but fail, to get a glimpse of what, exactly, they are wearing. Chiuri has just released her fall 2020 couture collection as a short film, with models frolicking in ethereal dresses through a lush landscape—online only, the way collections have to be shown during a global pandemic. While the lockdown has been conducive to designing finely crafted, unique pieces, actually…

“My goal was to convey a sense of joy.”—BULGARI CREATIVE DIRECTOR LUCIA SILVESTRI Bulgari has always been a little bit rock ’n’ roll, favoring bold colors, gobstopper-size stones, and attention-getting gems. For its aptly named Barocko fine jewelry collection, creative director Lucia Silvestri maintained that aesthetic while paying tribute to Rome—the city the house calls home—and its Baroque treasures. From Lorenzo Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers to Francesco Borromini’s Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, the Eternal City is teeming with sources of inspiration. “My goal was to convey a sense of joy,” Silvestri has said, and she channeled Baroque motifs, such as feathers, into fan shapes and captured the era’s highly decorative flourishes and sense of movement. “I decided to take a long walk one summer morning, and went all the…

total disbelief

Six years ago, Jessica Florence’s then boyfriend noticed a lump in her breast. “I could see [it] coming out of my shirt,” she says of the moment she knew she needed to seek medical help. “You know your body; you know when something’s not normal.” From 2015 to 2016, Florence, then 21, visited two doctors. Both told her it was just fibroids. She kept getting the same feedback: “You’re too young to have breast cancer.” It wasn’t until Florence, a Black woman and architecture student from Jacksonville, Florida, got new insurance and finally saw another doctor, who ordered a biopsy and ultrasound, that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was Stage IIIA, a more advanced form that indicates it has spread to the lymph nodes. COLLAGE BY CHRISTA DAVID. DAVID…
