Hello! In this month’s issue, we’ve asked a seemingly controversial question: ‘Should you be trying to improve your man?’ While some of the women in the office have responded with a stern ‘absolutely not’ (often followed by the very valid ‘you should love someone faults and all’ argument), most have responded with (an admittedly slightly sheepish) ‘yes’. The notion of what’s deemed ‘reasonable improvement’ seems to change depending on who you’re talking to, but common strategies range from choosing his clothes and vetting his friends list, to encouraging him to quit bad habits like smoking, and even putting a stop to dangerous hobbies. But perhaps the most surprising outcome of the poll is that almost all of the men we’ve asked have given us a resounding ‘yes’, saying they actually appreciate a…

'the secret to making it? confidence!'

Gina grew up in Joburg, before going on to study for a B. A. in Corporate Communications at the University of Johannesburg in 2006. A year later, she left her studies to pursue a career as a make-up artist. In 2012, Gina became the South African brand ambassador for international cosmetics brand Elizabeth Arden. She’s hosted many beauty masterclasses and, more recently, held talks for high school girls on a variety of topics such as career advice, bullying, and cyberbullying, all while still maintaining her business as a make-up artist. Gina lives in Linksfield. I had a really happy childhood. Almost every weekend, my dad would take us to the Vaal Dam – he wanted to make sure we experienced being outdoors. I enjoyed acting and public speaking from a young…

ACCESSORISE EVERYTHING If you're a firm believer that you can never have enough jewellery, now's the time to show it all off... at the same time. Yes, one of this year's trends is to accessorise to the max. Layer necklaces, stack bracelets and rings, and wear bold drop earrings, which can transform a simple outfit into a showstopper. Sound too OTT for you? Just choose one accessory (wisely) to make a statement as well as flatter your features. Long-line necklaces can slim a belly, tasselled earrings can elongate a round face, and chunky bangles can accentuate slim wrists. Then finish the look with a fun bag. Hinged bracelet, R170; bag, R560; both Colette Hayman. IF YOU ONLY BUY 1 THING... Get yourself an ever-chic and versatile shirt-dress like this one from local brand…

classics with a twist

Smart layering Play with length and proportions. Team a structured blazer with a figure-forgiving oversized shirt – it will flatter your shape and make you look taller. Racing stripes These on-trend, go-faster stripes will give your simple skinny jeans a cool twist, plus they make legs look longer. Neat & preppy Give sleek and simple workwear a youthful feel by ditching your handbag for a coloured backpack. Add sparkle No need to save sequins for nights out. They can be office appropriate; simply dress them down with casual joggers. Go retro Take your fashion cue from the ’90s by pairing a slinky midi-dress with a white tee and chunky sneakers. Mix it up Tuck in your shirt to show off your waist Master sport-luxe style easily by wearing a feminine blouse over slouchy bottoms. All in the detail Give the trusted denim jacket a…
