a celebration of the strength of women

I think all of us have a soundtrack to our lives – songs and tunes we carry with us and that instantly transport us back through time to people, places and occasions in our past that give us comfort and reassurance. For me, the one voice I’ve always listened to and loved is that of Annie Lennox; her vocals have been with me since I was a teenage fan of Eurythmics. Then came her solo albums. Several decades later, these are the tracks I’ll listen to above all others (as my own teenagers know all too well!). But my admiration of Annie is now based on far more than just her incredible voice. Over the past 15 years I’ve interviewed her several times and it’s never her own achievements or ambitions…

worth sharing write, email, facebook or tweet

Q. Who is the woman that inspires you most and why? A. My mum is my best friend, mentor and partner in crime. She has overcome numerous challenges dealt to her. She finds the light in every situation and never ceases to put everyone else first. GINNIE DABBS Meryl Streep is inspirational. I loved the speech she gave at a university graduation ceremony about women breaking the glass ceiling. SUZANNA LEIGHTON My Aunt Sylvia. She will be 78 on her next birthday and is as glamorous as a Hollywood star. She’s the most selfless person I know and her talent as an artist is incredible. AMANDA GRIFFITHS-JONES Nicola Adams boxed her way to an Olympic gold medal for Britain and has challenged the male-dominated sport all through her career. There wasn’t the funding for female boxers when…

‘i’m driven by a passion to contribute to global women’s rights’

Annie Lennox is a musical legend with a string of extraordinary accolades to her name, including eight Brit Awards (six for Best British Female – an unbeaten record to date), four Grammys, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award and, in 2011, she added an OBE to her list of achievements. The awards are in recognition of a career that has seen her sell over 83 million records, first as one half of Eurythmics and then in a solo career that continues to this day. Annie was made a Fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 2015, the first female to receive the honour. Aside from all her musical achievements, Annie was inducted as Glasgow Caledonian University’s first female chancellor in 2017 and she has also received some 20…

your new spring style rules

GO FOR TUTTI FRUTTI TAILORED SUITS Say goodbye to black, grey and navy two-pieces and say hello to spring’s joyful fruity suiting. Saturated shades of mimosa yellow, emerald green, candyfloss pink… any colour, in fact, as long as it’s bright and beautiful. Feeling brave? Try shoes in a contrasting colour. And as for underneath? White shirts look fresh and modern. BAGSY A NEW BRIGHT BAG Circle, saddle, barrel, bucket… these are the handbag shapes to show off. Small and simple leather designs in poppy, feelgood hues will look magical against printed fabrics, as well as give your beloved neutrals a new-season edge. Yes, you’ve arrived in handbag heaven! ADD A DOSE OF COOL WITH CULOTTES There’s no limit to our love of culottes, and they are a must-buy for fashion minimalists. The roomy cropped trousers…

how to wear… the pleated skirt

TIP Avoid wearing girlie pussy-bow blouses and dainty kitten heels with soft and floaty fanlike folds. GO STYLISHLY SWISHY Accordion folds are no longer just for preppy school skirts. Give your look a contemporary twist, and stop it teetering into twee territory by opting for sporty touches, such as hooded macs and backpacks. TIP Play with proportions. Leave your blouse long, loose and untucked, and layered under a shorter top. TIP Practical-looking shoes are not only comfy, they’re currently cool, too. SHORTCUT TO SUPER-CHIC One skirt, countless occasions. A black knife-pleat skirt will work magic for the office, parties and everything in between. The minimal design allows it to work alongside everything in your wardrobe with ease. TIP There’s nothing quite as stylish as a contrasting soft knit or an oversized sweater paired with a pleated skirt. TIP…
