Unsettling, yes, but it did mask the stink of whatever someone nuked for lunch in the breakroom microwave. So, not all bad. At issue was this month’s cover. The second in a row to feature hot-rodded old cars. (Cue the theme to Jaws or other creepy movie music here.) “But won’t the readers freak when they see three non-stock cars on the cover in two months?” asked an obviously apprehensive Jeff Koch, who is responsible for 99 percent of HMN cover photography. This too, from the guy who was an editor at Southern California’s Hot Rod magazine before we found him, lost and shivering among the maple trees in Vermont, apparently left stranded by a leaf-peeping tour.…

rlentinello@hemmings.com Being a hardcore hobbyist who greatly enjoys automobile restoration, as much as I appreciate all the talent, craftsmanship, and painstaking hard work that goes into restoring an old car back to the way it first rolled off the assembly line, nothing compares to a well-preserved old car that’s completely original. For a car to have survived fifty, sixty, or more years, and still wear its factory-applied paint, factory-stitched upholstery, and factory-assembled mechanicals, and still look, drive, and perform as if it’s only a few years old, makes for a truly special collector car. It seems that many of us who have been around the block a few times lament what we perceive as a lack of interest among our kids and grandchildren in our beloved hobby. I have seen this at local car shows, too. Possible solutions for righting this situation? I may have found one. At sidewalk sales this summer, my son, age 14 and a middle-schooler, saw a model kit for a Dodge Magnum. To him it is a classic. He expressed interest and we bought it. After a trip to the local hobby shop and $31 later, we opened the box and commenced building the Magnum. I showed him how to use spray paint on the body. He did okay. No overspray on my old Avanti! a septuagenarian porsche mechanic who’s still on the job

As enthusiasts, we celebrate cars that go the distance — like Irv Gordon’s multi-million-mile 1966 Volvo 1800S. But how about an auto technician whose professional career servicing one brand of cars has stood the test of time? Larry Moulton of Porsche Salt Lake City has been servicing Porsches since 1962, a year before the debut of the iconic Porsche 911. In November, Moulton was recognized by Porsche Cars North America as its longest-tenured U.S. Porsche dealership technician. Moulton, 74, is a Gold Level Porsche Certified Master Technician who has spent the majority of his 50-plus-year career with Strong Auto Group in Salt Lake City, Utah. He first received his Porsche certification in 1969. Along with Moulton, another 125 Porsche technicians across the U.S. were recognized for 20 or more years of service…

At this year’s SEMA Show, Chevrolet marked the 50th anniversary of the COPO Camaro with a limited run of racing-use-only 2019 COPO Camaros, wearing special anniversary graphics and paint that mirrors the Le Mans Blue of 1969. The bowtie brand also showed off a different strip-oriented Camaro — the eCOPO Camaro Race Car Concept — that isn’t for sale, but hints at an alternative performance future. The eCOPO Camaro replaces the V-8 with an electric motor or, more accurately, a pair of BorgWarner HVH250-150 electric motors, bolted together to form a single unit. Combined, the motor assembly sends roughly 600 lb-ft of torque through the Turbo 400 automatic transmission to the solid rear axle, the same unit used on gas-powered COPO Camaros. peterson named president and coo at summit

Summit Racing Equipment announced recently that Scott Peterson has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of the company. Peterson succeeds longtime President Ray Tatko, who is retiring at the end of 2018. Tatko will remain on Summit Racing Equipment’s Board of Directors, and act as an advisor to company officers. Peterson was hired in 1995 as Summit Racing’s operations manager. He was instrumental in improving the efficiency of the company’s order fulfillment center, leading to quicker shipping times and order accuracy for its customers even as order volume increased. Peterson was promoted to general manager in 2008, and guided Summit Racing Equipment through the 2008 recession, helping it emerge stronger than ever. Prior to joining Summit Racing Equipment, Peterson’s professional career included serving as a Marine Corps officer and various management positions…
