www.hifichoice.co.uk Issue No. 417 December 2016 Loudspeakers come in all shapes and sizes, and flicking through the pages of this month’s issue with its numerous models is a testament to this burgeoning sector of the audio market. From traditional floorstanders that range from models so large they block out the sun – step forward DALI’s Opticon 8 – to more elegant and less visually demanding designs, the Group Test starting on page 24 looks at six speakers priced £2,000 and under that tread a more conventional path in philosophy and construction that reaches right back to the dawn of domestic hi-fi itself. Compare these bulky, angular, passive floorstanders to Devialet’s extraordinary Gold Phantom reviewed on page 16, and the suggestion of the possible direction for the evolution of the loudspeaker and, indeed,…

golden greats

A whole new thing”. That’s what a car magazine colleague called McLaren’s P1 hybrid hypercar when he experienced it for the first time. In fact, so frequently were his usual ‘supercar’ frames of reference being pulled out of shape or simply blown apart as he drove it round the Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit in Abu Dhabi, he couldn’t stop saying it (he was being filmed). It would make an apt strap line for Devialet, the Paris-based high-end audio brand. In 2010, it introduced the world to an unprecedented type of analogue-digital hybrid integrated amplifier design that fused Class A purity with efficient, cool-running, compact Class D power and demolished the complacent industry notion that progress only ever happened in incremental baby steps. The D-Premier – a 240W-per-channel, wall-mountable slab of…

how we test

Unique group tests Our Group Tests are supported by rigorous and exhaustive listening tests carried out by experts FLOORSTANDING LOUDSPEAKERS GROUP TEST A LOUDSPEAKER WILL never sound at its best when factory fresh from the box, and will need time to free up properly to reach optimum performance. All six floorstanders here are given a minimum of 72 hours with the IsoTek Full System Enhancer CD on repeat, plus an additional two days of music before any listening commences. Auditioning is done in the main listening room over a period of a week, during which time optimal placement is experimented with. The listening position is adjusted so that the tweeter is roughly at ear height for each of the models, and the speaker is initially placed close to the rear wall then moved out…
