4 toxic beliefs that stop you from succeeding

Inc.com 1 SOMEONE ELSE IS HOLDING ME BACK. The only person you can control is yourself. Stop blaming others when the going gets tough. 2 I’M TOO BUSY. You have the same amount of time as everyone else. Are you completing and managing tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible? 3 THERE’S NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL PAY OFF. Train yourself to think of compensation as a reward for— not the driver of— exceptional effort. 4 THERE’S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT ME. You have skills that other people don’t. Put in the work, and see where it takes you. Go Beyond the Page You’ll find the icon at the left on selected pages throughout this issue. That’s your signal to grab your smartphone or tablet and go deeper with the content on those pages. Here’s how: 1. Download the free Layar app…

let us now praise today’s iconic entrepreneurs

WELCOME THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN more reasons not to be an entrepreneur than to be one. No one knows better than our readers about the superhuman hours, the strain on family, the repeated rejection, and, hanging over it all, the prospect of failure. Danny Meyer, founder of Union Square Cafe, Shake Shack, and many other well-known New York City eateries, is without question one of the great business leaders of his generation. Yet even he waited nine years to launch a second restaurant, convinced that his success with Union Square Cafe was a fluke. That’s why it flabbergasts us at Inc. when national policy makes entrepreneurship harder than it already is. The Exit Interview that ends this issue (page 120) is with Ayah Bdeir, the brilliant immigrant founder of littleBits, a toymaker…

behind the wheel

ALTER EGO “It’s a nice stress reliever to clear your head and force everything else out.” —DANIEL HA, co-founder, Disqus AS A KID, Daniel Ha was into two things: cars and computers. Growing up in Milpitas, California, 50 miles from San Francisco—where, in 2007, he would co-found and run the websitecommenting platform Disqus—he tinkered both with Web programs and with a manual-transmission Acura Integra, which he bought at age 16 without a clue how to drive it. “I convinced my dad that my friends had taught me how to drive a stick,” says Ha, now 29. “Every day after class, I’d practice driving around the block. Within a week, I was good to go.” Today, Ha relaxes by working on cars—and racing them. Every other month, he books a few hours at a track and…

fulfillment: a love story

EIGHTEEN months into running Tackle Grab, which sells fishing gear by monthly subscription, co-founder and CEO Stash Karandanis had had enough. The company had 2,000 subscribers and was growing fast. But Karandanis was still doing all the fulfillment— carefully packing merchandise into boxes, pasting mailing labels on them, and arranging for shipment— at his home in East Sandwich, Massachusetts. “Crazy is an understatement,” he says. “All of the logistics and shipping was in my basement. It took 12 days to do 2,000 kits.” Karandanis and his co-founder, Owen Hall, scrambled to hire a fulfillment service in nearby Boston, but couldn’t find a reasonably priced option. Then Riley Life Logistics in Raleigh, North Carolina, quoted a much lower price. Going with Riley freed up nearly half a month’s time for Karandanis to…
