I was on a Zoom call with the InStyle team on a Monday, when we rouse ourselves from a weekend at home to a week of working…at home. “Is it 17 weeks now?” I asked. I was greeted by small rectangles full of big nods. When we started to self-quarantine in mid-March, the idea of not going back to work until the summer seemed inconceivable. And yet here we are. There is currently no time line for returning to the office in New York. I haven’t seen my workmates since before I left for the European fashion shows in February. It’s a weird and tedious time. The irony is while we’re doing the best work we’ve ever done, in the most challenging environment, we feel like…blobs. This, while this country keeps spinning…

This cover shoot—our first on a working set since the pandemic began—was made even more remarkable by Zendaya, who celebrated Black talent, from the photographers and glam team behind the scenes to the designers she wore in front of the camera.
