editor’s letter

A few days after Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination, I Zoomed with her niece, Meena Harris. Meena, a former lawyer who served as senior adviser on policy and communications for Harris’s successful California Senate bid in 2016, now runs the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign. The organization, which supports women’s social issues, was named after Maya Angelou’s poem “Phenomenal Woman,” and it makes sense when you meet Meena. She is frank and funny, and when she’s tired, as she is today, Meena is a liberal swearer. She is not remotely “messaged,” which is the reason Phenomenal Woman has struck such a chord. She also makes one hell of a sweatshirt. We were excited to collaborate with Phenomenal Woman on this delightfully subversive pink Ambitious sweat. I make a point of…

Here’s another badass woman I love. Womanhood agrees with her. Such a lovely person. —@SINGIN72 LOCAL LEGEND Words can’t describe how special this was. To see one of the greats of our time, @drewbarrymore pouring love on a local paper that you pour yourself into each day is beyond words. I’ve worked at The Detroit News for three years now and I can tell you there’s no harder-working and factual news outlet. —@SARAH.RAHAL, via Instagram Drew Barrymore is perfect for [August’s] @InStyle. She’s unapologetic and tries to stay positive during these dark times. #instyle —@CANDICEMARIEE3, via Twitter YOU GLOW, GIRL Hi there! Music was at the heart of our Los Angeles shoot, which was inspired by Cynthia Erivo’s all-time favorite songs. The singer and actress rocked an Alberta Ferretti ensemble that echoed the funky vibe of “Let’s Groove,” by Earth, Wind & Fire; a red-hot Valentino trenchcoat (with a matching cat eye) to pay tribute to Rosalía’s “Malamente”; and a showstopping Louis Vuitton collar to honor “Chain of Fools,” by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. As Erivo and her glam team brought each look to life, they celebrated being reunited for the first time since the pandemic. “The music was loud, the laughter was louder, and everyone was dancing,” says stylist Jason Bolden, who joined a Soul Train line with Erivo and makeup artist Terrell Mullin as “Nights over Egypt,” by…

the start: the news in style

BIG BAND Tiffany & Co. marks the 50th anniversary of its Elsa Peretti Bone cuff, a style often spotted on fashion’s most fabulous wrists (see Studio 54–era Grace Jones and Iman). Our tribute? A gleaming gold stack of our own. LABEL WE LOVE Chelsea Paris Following a three-year hiatus, the footwear favorite just relaunched with a jazzy selection worth ditching your quarantine slippers for. “It’s the first work I’ve done on my own terms in a long time,” says designer Theresa Ebagua, who drew on both 1920s motifs and her Nigerian heritage for her latest collection. “It’s a fusion of art deco and African artistry.” Gilt Complex Indie-cool go-tos Nanushka and Alighieri join forces on fluid gold jewelry inspired by fertility rituals and protective armor. But all you really need to know is that it looks…
