I grew up not so far from the Arctic Circle. I was born in a place called Thurso on the North coast of Scotland. We actually lived in a place called Wick, but it didn’t have a maternity unit when I was born which I only mention to illustrate the Viking origins of both places. That’s because Wick is 58 degrees North... Oslo and Stockholm are 59 degrees North and for those of you who don’t realise, each degree of latitude is about 68 miles or 110km apart. So it was about a three-hour flight to the Arctic Circle - which again, I only mention to illustrate the harshness of climate and difficulty of life in my little corner of the world. Not much grew and fresh produce arrived in town with a horrible…

ultramarathon of internet surfing

This is the ultramarathon of internet surfing, but if you are ever at a loose end, check out the top 60 running Youtube channels for videos on running tips, techniques, training, nutrition and fitness. At https://blog.feedspot.com/running_youtube_channels/, someone has even taken the time to blog about the various channels, including Running Raw – this is not necessarily about running or eating a raw diet like you might expect – it’s more about being open, honest, vulnerable and on the living edge of experience. Happy surfing.…

religious running

Men dressed in white and wearing ancient tarbooka drums around their necks stand on the edges of the ancient hills of the Shomron. Then, the sound of the shofar breaks the silence and with its blast a pack of runners begin their journey through the lavish orchards, aromatic vineyards and layers of voluptuous greenery that was once – and is still today – the heart of Israel. The event is the Bible Marathon, and this year, it took place on September 28 with the same Israeli flags, balloons and loads of energy that has marked the modern version of this ancient running challenge for the past four years. The full marathon route runs from Rosh Ha’ayin (Eben Ezer in the Bible) to Shiloh, as described in the Book of Samuel. Last year, more than…

stormy the four-legged half-marathon runner

A stray dog named Stormy, who won hearts when he ran the complete Goldfields Pipeline half-marathon in Australia on July 22 (in approximately two and a half hours), has ended up in the dog pound. Stormy made numerous friends before the race started, then ran with various individuals after the gun went off. The four-legged runner came from a local indigenous community but did not have a clear owner. Park rangers picked him up after the race when no one claimed him. Race organisers visited Stormy in the pound a few days later to present him with a finisher’s medal in the hopes of attracting publicity and, hopefully, his rightful owner. It is expected he will be put up for adoption, and the friends he made during the race might have to fight over who…

run, tom, run

Arguably, Tom Cruise running his goddamn ass off is the glue that holds the Mission: Impossible franchise together. And now, we have math to prove it. In celebration of the most recent addition to the franchise, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Rotten Tomatoes has crunched the numbers to find out exactly how much the man has sprinted throughout his nearly four-decade long career, and whether his running has a net positive effect for his films. Spoiler alert: Tom Cruise’s running sells more tickets than Forrest Gump could ever hope to. Our guy is sure to put your Fitbit record to shame because he’s run more than 24,000 feet on screen. The study found a generally positive correlation when comparing the distances he ran for the box office and Tomatometer ratings for all his movies. The…

seven deadly sins

1:I get up reasonably early six days a week. The alarm goes off at 6.45am which is obviously not farmer or baker early, but it’s not gentleman’s hours either. But I don’t bound out of bed. I haul myself out. It’s undignified. Men twice my age do it with more grace and less noise, but I don’t particularly care. I wake up feeling like I have been in a car crash the day before. The first steps are painful. Usually the Achilles nags away and it is a hobble to the bathroom. The back takes an age to warm up and seriously the last thing on earth I feel like doing is running. So I feel like a total fraud when hardcore trail runners are up and away at 5.30am, enjoying what they…
