Recently, I was flicking through past issues of marie claire, which was like discovering a time capsule filled with nostalgic treasures. There were stories on a “terrifying” new face-freezing injectable called botox, a five-page feature on the Ange-Brad-Jen love triangle, and a tiny piece on a little-known singer called Lady Gaga. Then I came across a far-reaching survey we conducted exactly 10 years ago that asked 5000 women what they really wanted in all areas of their working lives. On the surface, it didn’t seem like much had changed, but then it struck me: the results seemed overridingly negative. In an era of quick-click purchases made from the comfort of your couch, a bricks-and-mortar boutique needs to offer something unique – even magical. Such was the premise of Tiffany & Co.’s new flagship store in Sydney, a high-glamour haven in the centre of the CBD. “With jewellery, there’s an emotional connection, so our physical stores are very important,” says Tiffany & Co. Pearls tend to fall into one of two polarised categories: your grandma’s straight-laced, stuffy strands or costumey trend pieces that come and go with the seasons. Jewellery brand Kailis, purveyor of pearls for more than 40 years, is forging a happy medium. The label has its roots in the crystalline blue waters off the north coast of Western Australia.
