a toast to 2019!

It seems like it was just yesterday we were toasting to 2019, and now 2020 is almost here. Can you believe how this year flew by? My goal for 2019 was to get more quilts finished, and I am pleased to say I did get more projects done. By the time you are reading this, I am guaranteed to be frantically finishing up several projects to place under the tree. For this issue, we wanted big, cozy quilts—and boy, did our designers come through! Charisma Horton designed the delightful Home Again using fabrics from the Home for Christmas collection by Dan DiPaolo for Clothworks Fabrics. She even stitched up the Christmas stockings that were part of the panel in that collection. Holiday Hearth by Krisanne Watkins is a vision to behold.…

• your photos• ideas• stories Gwen Kilops loves making scrappy quilts! She made a beautiful pink and fuscia version of the McCall’s Scrappy Anniversary pattern (McCall’s Qutiling January/February 2019) for her daughter Amber. The design was a large undertaking and Amber is thrilled with her new quilt! Anne Powell of Douglas, Wyoming, had so much fun piecing and quilting Flabbergast (McCall’s Quilting July/August 2019). She used a beautiful variety of earth tone batiks, and incorporated a timeless horse print batik as well. Joanne Jerome of Fresno, California made her granddaughter Emily a special To Do List quilt (McCall’s Quilting, March/April 2019) as a high school graduation gift. She added sashes to the squares, machine embroidered the words and flowers, and added small buttons to the flowers. The center square reads “Sparkle” and is…

• your questions• our answers Eileen Fowler Associate Editor About 20 years ago, I found an intriguing pattern for a pleated pineapple block. I thought this would make the perfect quilt for our soon-to-be-purchased queen-size bed. The design is heat-transferred to a muslin foundation. Wide strips are folded in half before sewing to the foundation to create a dimensional pleat-like edge. A warning alarm should have sounded off in my head as I purchased fabrics by the bolt, as well as a several yards of muslin. My long-armer must have thought I had lost my mind when I walked in with this beast. She begged me not to add batting between the massively heavy quilt top and backing...but I insisted. The sad ending to this story: the “Pineapple Monster” occupies a closet shelf.…

Quilt Designed & Made by Jo Moury Skill Level Challenging Finished Size 54 ½" x 54 ½" Finished Blocks 5 Block Y 12" x 12" 4 Block Z 12" x 12" NOTE: See Pattern Pull-Out Section for appliqué templates, which are printed without seam allowances. Planning Jo’s spectacular design is a showcase for your appliqué skills. The pieced blocks blend nicely with the complex floral design, making this a true holiday heirloom to be enjoyed for years. Take a closer look at the way Jo used the assorted reds for the appliqué flower in block Z. She kept the lightest reds in the center and used darker red fabrics towards the edges. Do the same to get the lovely glow that’s created by the value placement. Decide whether you want to use fusible appliqué or turned-edge appliqué before cutting…
