80 years over the rainbow!

It’s 80 years on, but millions of us still indulge in a trip to the Emerald City via the yellow brick road when we re-watch one of the greatest movies ever made, The Wizard of Oz! To celebrate its massive milestone, here are 10 little-known facts about the film that still makes waves today. 1 The whimsical horses that you can see in the Emerald City were actually coloured with jelly crystals – which meant the scenes in which they featured had to be shot very quickly, as they’d start licking them off! 2 The famous tornado was actually a 10-metre-long stocking that was spun around miniatures of the farm in Kansas and its surrounding fields. 3 The poppy field scene, where Dorothy falls asleep, features a snow fall – the ‘snow’ is actually…

from the editor

As you can probably tell fr om the occupation I’ve chosen, I’m a lot more comfortable dealing with words than numbers, but this week has somehow become chock-a-block full of sums! You’ll have just turned the page from our special 80th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz (for which I have to make an apology to my parents, who will no doubt still be able to remember every line of the film thanks to many years of me watching it over and over again) and I must say, I nearly popped a blood vessel doing the maths on what US$100 in 1939 would equate to today! I had to check it three times to make sure Toto the dog really did take home more than NZ$3000 a week for his role. That’s…

kate & meghan make amends it’s love all

Feud? What feud? It was all smiles and laughter, chats and applause as the Duchess of Sussex sat with the Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box for the Wimbledon women’s singles final, to watch Romania’s Simona Halep defeat Serena Williams. It was a public demonstration of friendship, with Meghan flanked by Kate and her stylish sister Pippa (35) – but was it real or orchestrated? Body language expert Judi James is in no doubt that it was genuine. “At times, they looked like three sisters. There were long bouts of mirrored body language between them and lots of eye contact,” she says. “It seemed to be Meghan making them all giggle.” It was the second time Kate and Meghan (both 37) have attended Wimbledon together, the first being last year. In the 12 months…

the lion prince

You would never know that the two couples hadn’t met before. Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex greeted Beyoncé Knowles and her husband Jay-Z like old friends at the European premiere of The Lion King remake. Meghan hugged Beyoncé, who voices Nala in the film, and the singer told the duchess, “We love you guys. Your baby is so beautiful.” She added Meghan was “my princess”, which triggered a meltdown among royal fans on Twitter. Harry hugged Beyoncé (37) and shared a manly handshake with Jay-Z (49). “Congratulations on the birth of your baby,” Jay-Z said to Meghan. He pecked her on the cheek before adding a parenting tip. “The best advice I can give you – always find some time for yourself.” Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish were…

courageous comeback celine’s new day has come!

For Celine Dion, the pain was simply unbearable. In January 2016, the iconic singer lost her beloved husband and manager René Angélil – the only man she’d ever loved and, in fact, ever kissed. “Her heart was in pieces,” recalls a source close to the star. Her grief deepened two days later when her brother Daniel also passed away, at 59. It was, hands down, the worst time in Celine’s life. But last week, as the 51-year-old transfixed the world in a series of show-stopping outfits at Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week, it was plain to see the vocal powerhouse has come through the worst of it. “Celine is finally back,” says the source. “Her career is on fire, her fashion is on point and, most importantly, she’s finally happy again.” In the agonising…

the veg factor

It was a trimmed-down Simon Cowell who stepped out in Malibu last week, with the star creator crediting his new vegan lifestyle for his lithe physique. Simon (59) has lost more than 10kg since embracing a healthier lifestyle due to a scary hospital admission in 2017, after he fainted due to low blood pressure while going down a set of stairs. “I went to see this specialist and he said to me after doing some blood work, ‘You can’t have red meat, dairy, sugar, bread or gluten,’” says Simon. He is allowed alcohol, though “maybe not quite as much”. The X Factor judge says it’s easy to stick to his new regime – and it’s clearly working!…
