royal blues

PRINCESS À LA MODE! Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark (47) achieved a royal flush with her wardrobe on an official visit to Paris. The Australian-born wife of Crown Prince Frederik (51) donned a series of chic blue-and-white outfits while in the French capital. The couple were in the City of Love for three days to promote trade relations between Denmark and France. The Danish royals may be lesser known than their British counterparts, but Mary’s sartorial choices give the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex a run for their money!…

from the editor

This week I’ve been watching the TV through a completely different lens. I popped along to The Power of Inclusion summit last week, where filmmakers fr om around the globe gather ed to discuss how we can improve diversity on screen. And boy , there were some eye-opening moments. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern opened the event, sharing one of her “tamer” work stories of being asked to make tea for male colleagues after it was assumed she was an assistant, not an MP herself. Geena Davis – of Thelma & Louise fame – was one of the standout speakers. I loved hearing what she devotes most of her time to now - an institute that, among other endeavours, works to increase the visibility of females in children’s TV. Geena says she works…

why mike mcroberts has asia on his mind tragedy to triumph my deep bond with japan

Mike McRoberts, All Black? Well, not quite – but if it wasn’t for a certain endearingly cranky All Black coach, the chat the Weekly is having with the much-loved Newshub presenter might be going a lot differently. We’re catching up with Mike to talk all things rugby – he’s about to return to Japan to front Newshub’s coverage of the 2019 Rugby World Cup - and the celebrated journalist reveals he has a deep love of our national game, which could have gone all the way were it not for a bloke they call Shag. “I used to play with Steve Hansen back in the day,” tells Mike, grinning. “I played club rugby for years – for Suburbs, and he played for Marist in Christchurch. We were both quite big centres back…

renée’s lucky escape

‘Fame turns you to stone’ For 23 years Renée Zellweger has been the toast of la-la land, dating rock gods and movie stars, winning awards and glittering like a polished jewel on the red carpet. It’s the kind of fame that makes fortunes but also destroys lives – and for Renée it almost did both. Thanks to a therapist, she’s managed to keep both her fortune and her sanity, but not all who’ve walked the same path have been so lucky. In 1969, iconic actress Judy Garland became a casualty of the same Hollywood machine that almost broke Renée - and now, 50 years later, the Bridget Jones actress is bringing her back to life on the big screen. The irony of playing a star who cracked under the pressure of fame is not…

i’m still standing elton reveals his biggest secrets

No-one on the planet would think Sir Elton John’s life has been boring – but the extent of his drink, drug and sex-fuelled existence in the 1970s and 1980s has been laid bare in his new autobiography Me, along with shocking stories and twisted tales concerning his dysfunctional family, famous and flashy friends, and his own personal battles with addiction. But among the tragedy, there’s also a heap of humour. Here are some of the 72-year-old’s scandalous revelations. 1 His mum almost spoilt his wedding day Elton’s mother Sheila, with whom he eventually fell out, was a difficult woman, he says. On the day civil unions became legal in the UK, Elton and his lover David Furnish had planned an intimate wedding followed by a huge party at their Windsor home. The…

birthday glee

I It was a case of happy families for Dakota Johnson, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow last week, with the Shakespeare in Love actress happily attending the 30th birthday party of her ex-husband’s girlfriend. Pictured giving Dakota a huge hug, Gwyneth seemed comfortable and right at home as she danced the night away with the couple in Malibu. “Dakota had a huge birthday celebration and she seemed to have a wonderful time,” tells a guest. “You can tell that she is loved because so many of her friends showed up. Even Gwyneth was there. “Dakota seems very close with her. They hugged and chatted a lot.” Gwyneth even posted a gorgeous black and white picture of the Fifty Shades of Grey actress to her Instagram, wishing a “Happy 30th Birthday to this absolute gem”. The…
