As empty plots of land are rare in this part of Jo’burg, the owners of this house were fortunate to come across a subdivision consisting of a tennis court. The level property gave architect Nicki de Souza, who specialises in residential projects and has had his own practice since 2015, a blank slate to design the modern French-style home his clients requested. “As members of a large Greek family, it was important for them to have the kitchen at the centre of the house. They also wanted the indoor spaces to flow naturally to the outdoors so guests never feel cut off and are always part of the social amphitheatre,” says Nicki. The challenge, Nicki explains, was to do this on a very narrow stand. “The owners were initially concerned whether…

Tell us about your artistic background. I spent hours as a child studying the beautiful flowers in our garden, fascinated by their colours and forms. At school, I took art as an extramural and entered several competitions. My father suggested that I study graphic design at university rather than art, as it would open up more career opportunities, but after working in advertising for many years I realised art was my true passion. I quit my job to focus on painting full time. How would you describe your style? It’s all about bold colour, simplified forms and strong lines. I give myself the freedom to experiment with new techniques, which encourages creativity and keeps me motivated. I experiment a lot with colours and different brush strokes. What is your artistic process? Once…

EXPERT TIPS Suné Fick, senior decor buyer for @home, has these tips for festive decor Invest in a beautiful tree and collect special baubles that can be used every year and eventually become heirlooms. Choose those that suit your decor. If you prefer a minimalist look, stick to one or two styles, use lots of them and combine them with LED lights. For something more opulent, use a mixture of baubles in different colours and shapes, and layer them with garlands. Carry the style of the Christmas tree through to the table setting and the mantelpiece display. You can even match your gift wrap and ribbon to the theme. WHO LIVES HERE A couple of empty nesters who travel frequently and Spud, the spaniel. THE HOUSE A double-storey townhouse in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, courtyard and terrace on the lower floor. Upstairs are two en suite bedrooms. Having worked with interior designer Sue Bond on three previous projects, the owners of this Kalk Bay townhouse kept their brief simple. After visiting Sue’s Clifton villa, they said: “We’ll have this, thank you!” Then they departed on one of their adventures and left Sue in charge. “They didn’t ask to see a thing – not a roll of wallpaper, a throw or a cushion – before they returned from their travels,” recalls Sue. “It turned out to be one of my favourite projects.” With her outgoing personality and…
