Shooting Times & Country

15-May-2019

Since its launch in 1882, Shooting Times & Country Magazine has been at the forefront of the shooting scene. The magazine is the clear first choice for shooting sportsmen, with editorial covering all disciplines, including gameshooting, rough shooting, pigeon shooting, wildfowling and deer stalking. Additionally the magazine has a strong focus on the training and use of gundogs in the field and, because it is a weekly publication, the magazine keeps readers firmly up-to-date with the latest news in their world.

tweed

Tweed is a one-year-old cocker beginning his career as a gundog. He doesn’t like new blankets but prefers ones with holes in them. He seems to think he is a parrot as he enjoys sleeping on his owner’s shoulder. In association with Orvis For all things dog, Shooting Times recommends Orvis.co.uk Outdoor outfitters, instructors and apparel makers since 1856.…

highland caper

Last week I went on something of a busman’s holiday to the Highlands. On Friday, I drove through unseasonable snow to go and visit Ewen Archer, the headkeeper at the Seafield estate.Seafield is home to more than 20 per cent of the country’s capercaillie population and to say that Ewen takes his custodianship of the species seriously would be a mammoth understatement. Each year, he walks every inch of the estate’s fencing and covers it in markers. This makes it visible to the birds and ensures they can avoid fatal collisions.“The capercaillie will never be shot again,” he said. “We are conserving this bird for the nation.”As we drove, Ewen told me that last year, footage of hare shooting on the estate had been sent to the press by…

defra takes over licensing

“The present situation needs to be considered with particular intensity and urgency” Defra has taken over the power to issue general licences from Natural England as the chaos following their revocation continues. In a letter to Natural England chair Tony Juniper, environment secretary Michael Gove said he was taking control because of “the scale of interest and concern that has been generated by the decision to revoke; and because my judgement is that the present situation needs to be considered with particular intensity and urgency”. The move will allow Defra to bring its much larger number of staff and budget and the legal powers of the minister to bear on resolving the problem. Welcoming the news, BASC chief executive Ian Bell said: “We hope that this intervention by Mr…

deer fight caught on camera

The buck has the distressed yearling pinned down against a hedge Relentless in its attacks, the roebuck inflicted more than 40 wounds An Oxfordshire stalker has captured dramatic footage of a mature roebuck fighting a yearling.Hugh van Cutsem was stalking with a companion at about 8.30pm when he heard a deer screaming.Speaking to Shooting Times, he said: “My first reaction was that the deer was caught in wire or that there was a dog there. We then saw a five-year-old buck boring away at something and twigged what was going on. He came out of the hedge and stood looking pretty pleased before he went off to chase a doe. The youngster then staggered out of the hedgerow in a bad way, holding his head down very…
