crafting tales

A year ago, our associate editor Scott Yorko hatched a plan with a guy in Colorado with detailed knowledge of high-quality, counterfeit vintage snowboards. With a small but growing community interested in collecting vintage boards, the idea was to show just how easy it is to forge a highly sought-after classic deck and sell it to an unsuspecting buyer on eBay. It’s happened before, and Yorko wanted to expose the ruse. There were some twists and turns along the way, and no one was quite sure how it would end up, but you can see the results in the Fool’s Gold story on page 62. It’s not the type of story we’d usually pursue. More often, we team up with a group of pros and do something like go heliboarding at…

travis rice’s new movie, the fourth phase, extends filming for a third season

IT’S BEEN FOUR FULL YEARS SINCE THE ART OF FLIGHT RELEASED AND SET THE BAR FOR THE BIGGEST BUDGET, HIGHEST VISIBILITY SNOWBOARD FILM TO DATE. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE WENT TO THE WORLD PREMIERE IN NEW YORK CITY, WHICH SUMS UP THE EXPOSURE LEVEL. THE CLOSEST MOST SNOWBOARD PREMIERES GET TO CELEBRITY INTEREST IS A TERJE HAAKONSEN APPEARANCE. ART OF FLIGHT WAS SO SUCCESSFUL THAT IT WAS THE BEST-SELLING SNOWBOARD FILM IN 2011, 2012, AND 2013, SECOND ONLY TO HIGHER IN 2014. Since then, we’ve seen little footage of AOF front man, Travis Rice. After taking a season off filming, there was his X Games Real Snow Backcountry entry in 2013, consisting of one run down an Alaska face, narrated by Todd Richards as Shush Mogulman, mocking the mainstream contest genre. Rice didn’t…

mediocre madness

“WE SPENT EVERY MOMENT SKATING, PLAYING SOCCER, CLIFF JUMPING, SWIMMING, BARBECUING, AND SLEEPING 40 FEET OFF THE GROUND IN A TREE HOUSE—NOT A BAD FIRST DAY.” NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO RIDE STEEP FACES IN ALASKA, JUST LIKE NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO GO ON A RAIL TRIP TO MINNESOTA OR COMPETE AT THE X GAMES. SORT OF LIKE THE IDEA BEHIND THE DRINK WATER FILM PATHOLOGY, THE MEDIOCRE MADNESS TOUR WAS DESIGNED TO BE A TRIP ANYONE WOULD ENJOY—PARTICIPANTS AND SPECTATORS ALIKE. THIS APRIL, WE SET ABOUT SCHEMING A TOUR DE ACTIVITIES WORTHY OF CAPPING OFF WINTER AND PUT TOGETHER AN EMAIL LIST OF 30 SNOWBOARDERS, SKATEBOARDERS, SURFERS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND RANDOM FRIENDS AND INVITED THEM TO OREGON. NOT NECESSARILY A SNOWBOARD TRIP, IT WAS JUST A TRIP IN A VAN, WITH THE…

inside the line

If you ever get a chance to ride with Pacific Northwest legend Peter Line, there’s a good chance he’ll tug at your zippers or yank on your hood. “It’s just a habit,” he shrugs. You see, Line, 41, is one of the rare vets of snowboarding that cares how shit gets made, as well as how it looks on and off the hill. So, when another Pacific Northwest fixture, Dakine, went looking for the right guy to reboot their men’s outerwear collection, he fit the bill. After two seasons with Dakine, Line is lead designer on the entire collection. “When he first submitted his ideas, it was incredible what he turned in,” says Scotty Connerly, Dakine’s snow marketing director who approached Line about the job. “I didn’t think my bosses…

FRESH TRACKS You know that feeling, when a deep inhale of crisp mountain air tingles your nostrils and inflates you full of stoke. From the momentous push of your initial drop to the first big slash, cold blower blasting back into your face, you hit the point of ultimate shred ecstasy. You linger, admiring the final product but always wanting more. First tracks are what we live for. As long as it snows, there are plenty of ways to get that feeling, but they often require venturing off the beaten cat track. Whether it’s touring out to a rustic backcountry hut, setting up a sidecountry mission, or rallying a crew with first class tickets to Powder Town, you want the best gear to find that float and elevate your experience to the…

fool’s gold

You never know what you’ll find when you buy an old storage unit in Williston, Vermont, and start rummaging through its contents. It could have been a dead body, but luckily it was a snowboard. eBay user “roxxxyvt” typically sells brightly-colored skirts and pastel jewelry with the occasional eyelash extension kit—an unlikely purveyor of one of the rarest snowboards in existence, a dusty unicorn buried in a dark corner for 36 years. “I bought a storage unit because it contained some clothes and furniture that looked interesting to me,” read her item description. “Finding the snowboards was a surprise since they were not in view when I first looked at the unit.” The listing was titled “snowboard Burton Boards by STratton Mtn vintage used.” Only 28 minutes into the auction, the first bidder…
