got you covered!

I’ve said it a few times in the past but it’s worth restating, writing this editorial is the most difficult thing that I do each month. Drive reviews are no big deal and tech stories are fairly easy, however, when it comes time to pull together an editorial I tend to suffer from major writer’s block. I don’t bring that up looking for pity; as issues go it’s a fairly minor one. It drives my managing editor and art director crazy, but they’re stuck with me (for now at least), so it is what it is. Add in the fact that my wife and I welcomed our second child right in the middle of the production of this issue, cranking my current bout with writer’s block up to 11. “IN MY…

Rivian Gets $500 Million Investment From Ford JOINING A $700 million equity round led by Amazon, Ford announced it would invest $500 million into hopeful electric automaker Rivian. As part of the investment, Ford and Rivian will work together to develop a next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford’s growing EV portfolio, possibly using Rivian’s “skateboard” platform. The skateboards contain batteries and other electrical components needed to power the vehicles. “This strategic partnership marks another key milestone in our drive to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility,” said Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford said the company is excited to invest and partner with Rivian. He also noted Ford and Rivian share a common goal towards sustainability and innovation. shared burdens

The automotive world is fairly ablaze right now with armchair experts crying foul over platform sharing. One of the more notable examples is Toyota approaching BMW about a jointly developed sports car project, with one result the G29-generation Z4 roadster and the other the Supra A90 coupe. Critics probably unfairly reduce the Supra to a steel-roofed Z4 and nothing more. A similar argument exists comparing the $167,725 Bentley Bentayga and the $200,000 Lamborghini Urus to the Audi Q7 and Euro-market Volkswagen Touareg, sub-$60k SUVs that donate their modular bones to those machines. Could a six-figure Bentley or Lamborghini possibly be special enough to justify their price tags if they share a Volkswagen-designed platform with an Audi that costs less than a third of the price? “PUTTING THE TUNDRA AND TACOMA ON THE…

gladiator

It seems like the four-wheel-drive world has been waiting for a Jeep pickup ever since the XJ Cherokee–based MJ Comanche ceased production in 1992. Over the ensuing decades, visions of what a modern Willys pickup, J-truck, or even Scrambler could be danced through our collective heads. Jeep came close a few times but never pulled the trigger, only teasing us with what-could-be concepts, like the show-stopping 2005 Jeep Gladiator, the nostalgic 2010 Jeep NuKizer 715, the half-hearted 2011 JK-8 Independence, the awe-inspiring 2011 Mighty FC,the vintage 2011 J-12, and the attention-getting 2016 Red Rock Responder. A JK-based Jeep pickup from the factory came close to happening in the later years of the platform, but Jeep decided to move the development so that the JL and JT could be engineered concurrently, and…

six concepts, all of them pickups

As usual, Jeep brought several concepts to the 2019 Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, but uncommonly, each and every one of them are pickups this year. Jeep J6 Another favorite of the batch is the Jeep J6, which is clearly based on the 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL but comes with several retro touches. The J6 started life as a Rubicon Unlimited model before being custom-built into a two-door pickup with a bed that’s a full foot longer than that of the Gladiator. Alas, such a body style is unlikely for production. The J6’s Metallic Brilliant Blue paint is an homage to a color available on the 1978 Jeep Honcho. Badging is clearly inspired by Jeeps of the 1970s as well. The 6-foot cargo box is guarded by color-matching spray-in bedliner, a feature…
