FD All of my riding is solo now, and I have only ridden with other people three times since March. I’m not going to lie: I miss riding with others! AH I never take any ride for granted! JS For the first two months in lockdown, I discovered the rooftop of my apartment — along with my trusty home trainer — like never before. It is my sincere hope that the global COVID-19 pandemic will soon become a chapter in our history books, and not a looming danger that threatens our lives each day. It’s my sincere hope that we will someday regale our children with tales of social distancing and mask-wearing and all of the other contemporary actions that we’ve come to follow in 2020. Hopes like these provided the inspiration for this September/October issue of VeloNews, which focuses on how the sport of cycling endured and evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. ANDREW HOOD European Editor If the coronavirus changed anything about racing, it’s how the peloton looks before and after the race. Thankfully, the “during” has largely remained unchanged. It’s everything from the start villages to the sign-in ceremony, the after-race podium protocols and how close fans and media can get that’s changed. And until there is a proven treatment for COVID-19, it’s likely to stay this way for a while. At the Vuelta a Burgos, fans were required to wear face masks and apply hand sanitizer before being allowed into a fenced-off area at the start. At Strade Bianche, officials went even further, and closed off Siena’s emblematic central square Piazza del Campo to any fans at all.
