on my desk this month

I recently found myself sitting next to a young man and his birth mother who, amazingly, had just met each other the day before. A few months earlier, Jacob Thornton, 28, had taken a DNA test through the health and ancestry company 23andMe, seeking a connection with the birth mother who’d given him up for adoption when he was a newborn. The results showed a genetic match with a young woman in Indiana who turned out to be his maternal aunt—a discovery that led to the reunion with Natalie. Seeing Jacob and Natalie, who look much alike, was deeply moving; they seemed joyful and a bit awestruck, as if they couldn’t quite believe they were together. On page 52, writer Melody Warnick reports on a similar homecoming. Annette Adams found…

the best time to… take a nap

ANYTIME BEFORE 3 P.M. IS GENERALLY A GREAT TIME for a nap—any later and you could find it more difficult to fall asleep for the night. But the real key to naps is length, says Natalie D. Dautovich, Ph.D., an expert at the National Sleep Foundation. A study published in the journal Sleep found that a 10-minute nap boosts cognitive performance and reduces sleepiness, while ones that stretch past half an hour can leave you groggy for nearly an hour. So find a cool, dark place; set an alarm for 30 minutes; get comfortable (nap posture doesn’t affect sleep quality); and allow yourself to drift away. If you’re frustrated that you can’t fall asleep after 15 minutes, it’s best to get up and go on with your day.…

Trend to Try Shirtdress Ode to a Shirtdress A glamorous woman, when faced with a nonglamorous but pleasant situation—a stroll through a beachy town or a quick Sunday coffee at a café with a childhood friend—will look into her closet for something to wear and pull out a shirtdress. It’s true. I’ve seen it happen. And I think you should too. Wear a shirtdress, that is. But you say you’re not a glamorous woman? That’s OK. I’m not telling you to buy a floor-length crystal-encrusted gown. Just a shirtdress. Roll the sleeves. Pop the collar. Wear a sandal. Feel pretty.…

how do i stop mosquito bites from itching?

MANUKA HONEY Dab a drop or two of this honey, which contains an anti-inflammatory organic compound not found in other honey, on the bite. Plus, the sticky stuff is a deterrent to scratching. Buy it at grocery stores. A CHILLED SPOON The cool sensation brings down swelling and numbs the skin, which can give you immediate short-term relief. Ice also does the trick, but a metal spoon that has been frozen for 10 to 20 minutes will stay cold longer. OATS Mix a spoonful of crushed oats with a little water to create a paste to apply to your bite. Oats have natural soothing properties that calm itchy, irritated skin.…
