In 1845, the fungus phytophthora infestans hit Ireland. This particular strain invades the potato plant and causes the complete decay of the crop. At the time, around half of the Irish population depended on the potato as a major part of their diet. By late 1845, a huge proportion of the country’s potato crop had been wiped out, and the situation worsened over the next two years. This led to the famine known as the Great Hunger, which killed over one million people and forced two million more to flee Ireland’s shores, often in squalid conditions that caused even more deaths at sea. The British government, led by the Whigs, did not intervene, allowing the disease to ravage Ireland.
