In watchmaking discourse, “handmade” is often used casually to describe watches that are, in reality, hand finished. Handmaking is something else entirely. It entails fabricating every component from raw stock by hand, while deliberately excluding modern industrial processes. This means hand turning, hand milling, sawing, filing, drilling, shaping and finishing carried out on traditional, manual tools or manually operated lathes at the bench. Certainly, the guichet-style watch is a measured flex of Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking maturity and in-house expertise in movement design, case-making and métiers d’art. Powered by a full rotor automatic base movement developed by La Fabrique du Temps, it came in a refined Tambour case that’s entirely produced and exquisitely finished in-house. The Chronometric Advancement award is issued to recognize advances in chronometry that meaningfully extend or exhaust the state of the art. While the Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A. (for Ultra Fine Accuracy) does not compete on the same axis as conventional fully mechanical movements or chronometric solutions, its achievement is unambiguously chronometric in nature. Spring Drive extended the state of the art and the U.F.A. exhausted the paradigm it created. It improved Spring Drive’s usual precision of ±10 seconds per month by an order of magnitude, to ±20 seconds per year, becoming the most accurate mechanically powered wristwatch.
