Hugh Sohn, chief sub editor My sex ed. was a seven-word speech from a master at an all-boys school when I was 13: “Masturbation, good thing; mutual masturbation, bad thing.” It was the 1970s and this was code for “gay sex is bad.” Obviously, he wasn’t doing it right Rom Sartipi, groomer Soon after coming out and before realising my daddy issues, I had a thing for older guys. I gained most of my sex education from them. Since then, the age requirement and “skill” has been replaced by connection. I’m just glad that it’s easier to access information about sex and sexual health nowadays Jamie Wareham, head of digital production My sex education came from a local LGBTQ group called Freedom Youth which ran safe-sex and HIV awareness workshops. We also got the Westboro…

editor in chief’s letter

Whenever I visited my (now ex) boyfriend in Berlin I was always surprised by the difference between Germany’s attitude to nudity and that of the stuffy UK. One time, we went to Liquidrom sauna (the non-sexual kind, I hasten to add) for a spa day. There was no separation of genders beyond the changing rooms — men and women would sit in the same cabins, with all their bits and bobs on show. I’d always considered myself a free spirit until one day when the ex suggested we go to a famous luxury countryside spa with his parents as my birthday present. It wasn’t the Tiffany ring that I was hoping for. “Brits are famous for our prudish perspective” Anyway, my Britishness kicked in and I politely declined. His parents are lovely people,…

FITBIT VERSA 2 Knowledge is power, according to the old adage, and Fitbit’s latest smartwatch, the Versa 2, puts more knowledge than ever in your palm (well, on your wrist). Adding to the usual suite of fitness tracking statistics, the watch offers a nightly sleep-quality score, and the option to be woken at a time within a selected 30-minute window. It also has a microphone for Alexa-related enquiries, such as: “How many sit ups am I away from Chris Hemsworth abs?” Price: from £199. fitbit.com MASCULINITIES: LIBERATION THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY Whether you’re masc4masc or a femme queen, there’s plenty to ponder in this exhibition that dissects the idea of masculinity, partly through an LGBTQ lens. Hundreds of works from more than 50 artists will be showcased at London’s Barbican Art Gallery, from 20 February. Among…

we need to join up the dots

Mental health and queer sexual health are seen as two big and separate conversations, but there is a distinct connection. One may sound all-too-familiar for some: having sex to comfort yourself, sexualising yourself to fit in, measuring your self-esteem against your sex life. And that’s why we need to consider sexual and mental health as two sides of the same coin. For better or worse, queer people are still associated with sexual taboos. Compounded by the fact that the spaces in which we most often meet are nightclubs and bars, and that these events’ subsequent branding means that the few queer faces featured in marketing are often the most sexualised people we see. Hovering in the background of our community’s sex-hungry appetite is a mental-health crisis. In a recent study, National Student Pride*…

so many tears

Who is Marikiscrycrycry? An alter-ego to perfect the practice of crying in front of people, little wails and shouts for one alienated motherfucker – wanting to be seen as human and more, and not knowing why. Sum up the power of dance in no more than five words. Where I feel alive. How would you describe your style of dance? Rude and embodied. What attracted you to the world of dance? Working with my body has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I decided to pursue dancing as a profession after being fired from my first dance company job after two days in New York City. I decided to do my own thing and somehow it’s worked. “The world fails to extend humanity to marginal identities and experiences” Who, or what, inspired…
