Mark Gavisser, writer Joburg Pride 1990 was South Africa’s first one ever, just months after Nelson Mandela’s release. I was one of the organisers of this powerfully political event: an assertion by black and white queer South Africans that we needed to be seen, too, as our country transitioned from apartheid to democracy. Juno Dawson, writer I love a big Pride, but there’s something about the grassroots feel of Trans Pride in Brighton that feels true to the spirit of Pride being a protest. It feels like a march, not a parade. Matt Lister, fitness writer Running through the streets of New York City wearing a tutu, sequinned shorts and my Pride flag as a sash, singing and dancing with some of my closest friends, holding the hand of the man I love, and all…

As homosexuals, we were an aberration to be shunned. ‘Gay’ was a relatively new term that encompassed anybody who did not identify as cis or straight. We were relegated to the shadows of the night and certainly not welcome to be out and proud in broad daylight. As they took to the streets en masse on that first Stonewall anniversary for a protest that would eventually come to be known as Pride, it must have been inconceivable to them that one day laws would protect our jobs, that marriage or civil partnerships…

dating? i’m proud to be picky

“Gosh, you’re so picky!” Steph exclaimed as I thrashed through potential dates on Hinge. I’ve become an expert skim-reader and can easily finger my way through a dozen boys in a couple of minutes. It’s easy for her to say – she’s been riding the same dick since she was 19. Times have changed, especially in the dating game. What she perceives as my fussiness is simply an advanced screening process after my last three dates turned out exactly the same — with me wishing I’d stayed indoors (this was pre-COVID, hun). “A date can fuck right off if they listen to Radio 4” There was nothing particularly wrong with any of these men; they just weren’t right. More specifically, they were — for lack of a better word — wet. And not because…
