Sarah Begum, travel writer Mesopotamia! I travelled to Mardin to learn about the origins of agriculture; then [Neolithic site] Göbekli Tepe, where I had a vision of me as a queen in white garb dancing around the temple for a sacred ritual; and Nemrut Dagi, the ancient royal tomb of King Antiochus I (1st century) to meet Zeus. Richard Matias, photographer “OK, that’s it — no more photos.” An unusual thing for a photographer to say, but that was my ongoing reaction on my trip from Picton to Queenstown — literally the top to the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand in 2017. How many stunning pictures can you get? Around every corner was a different landscape: from lush, green farmland to breathtaking lakes and rivers to glaciers and snow-topped mountains.…

“The freedoms many of us are privileged to enjoy are completely foreign concepts for too many” This past year, the extent of my travelling largely focused on trips from the living room to the kitchen, while the most exotic thing I saw was a pineapple in Sainsbury’s. As such, it seemed peculiar for Attitude to publish its annual Travel-themed issue. The roll out of COVID vaccines various may be offering the UK a healthy head start in the slow process of bringing the world back to some semblance of normality, but we decided not to jinx progress by going our usual route of putting out a Travel issue that focused on the many wonderful places you can (under normal circumstances) escape to. Besides, I do semi-blame myself for this whole pandemic mess because,…

TAKE FLIGHT IN YOUR LIVING ROOM. Get up at an ungodly hour, then make your way to check out (phew, no queue). Pull up a chair, give yourself minimal leg room and sit uncomfortably for six-plus hours, only getting up to go to the loo. Feeling aggy? Good, your holigay has begun! PRETEND YOU’RE STAYING IN A FIVE-STAR HOTEL. Don’t bother making your bed, and leave your wet towels on the bathroom floor. the world is waiting

This past year has been like no other – everyone reading this will have been impacted in some way by the COVID-19 pandemic, and at Virgin Atlantic we have faced the most difficult 12 months in our proud 37-year history. We’re not alone — according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, one in ten jobs globally relies on a healthy travel and tourism industry, which accounts for more than 10 per cent of global GDP — or $8.9 trillion. As lockdown eases and destinations begin to open their borders, our thoughts turn to the safe restart of international travel. We know there is pent-up demand; customers can’t wait to escape to a sunny beach, to visit friends and loved ones overseas, or to re-establish business connections around the globe. In a post-COVID…
