meet the team

Dan Hastings, freelance journalist I came to London on a summer school exchange programme in 2009 at 15. It was my first time alone away from Réunion Island and my first time befriending teenagers my age who openly identified as bisexual and lesbian. They taught me so much about the joy of being different. Gary Simons, art director My first summer in Brighton changed my whole outlook. I spent the long hot days exploring, from the beach and bars to the Festival and Pride. I met some amazing people and knew this was going to be a great place to live. Princess Julia, writer and DJ DJing at Touché last year gave me life. Shay Malt from Adonis put on a drag review show at Costa Del Tottenham. With all the rules and regulations of…

editor in chief’s letter

Strolling through south London with a friend on an unusually chilly weekend in May, I rolled my eyes at the local election results as he sighed with a heavy heart how the government’s travel green list wasn’t extensive enough to include Mykonos. The poor bastard has had the rug of his entire existence pulled out from under him. “When will things go back to normal?” he said, dejectedly. “I guess, never?” I said, glancing over at him. He wasn’t overly enthused by my response. “Nobody ever said life has any guarantees,” I added. Over the past year, I’ve come to realise that we often lull ourselves into a false sense of security clouded by routine, numbed by social media and television, or the distraction found swimming at the bottom of a bottle of…

the rules

START AT THE GRASSROOTS… by explaining what ‘sport’ is (ignore the retching). Mention that most sports involve getting your hands on lots of different balls — big ones, small ones, furry ones. That should do the trick. JOKE! Let’s smash the stereotype that gays don’t like sport; we just haven’t always been made to feel comfortable playing it. Like, PE teachers, stop giving bullies the power to pick teams. Or saying we “throw like a girl”. Oh, and quit watching us in the shower — creep! EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE! Gurl, did you know that your jockstrap isn’t just for the bedroom? *GASP* You’ve already got the gear, so you might as well put it to use. Yes, hun, you can leave the poppers at home. On second thoughts… MAKE SPORTING SPACES SAFE AND…

situation critical

“When I needed someone to listen to me during a dark time, no one was available, so I took to self-harming. It got so bad that I considered taking my life to end the pain and endless loneliness.” Chelsea, 26 – survey respondent When we hear about suicide within the LGBTQ+ community, it’s understandably hard for us to talk about it. Many of us have at some point in our lives thought about ending it all, and some of us have acted on those thoughts. I was one of those people. As a teenager, I struggled with my sexuality and nearly lost my life on several occasions, but I was one of the lucky ones who survived. This past year has been one of the worst for our community. Support services limited.…
