just get out there!

What you currently don’t own is not a hindrance to enjoying the 4WD lifestyle…it’s a part of it. What the heck am I talking about? I’m talking about the small steps within a passion that are rapidly being forgotten yet are so important. Starting basic isn’t a problem, it’s a part of the cycle. At a recent 4WD show I asked my stage audience to raise their hands and let me know what their very first mods would be on a vehicle and the answers were almost 100% top shelf. Lockers, big lift, large tyres, winches and microwave ovens (ok there were no ovens but you get my point). Not one person said an eski, a bag of ice and a long weekend. Nobody considered starting small and learning and building…

what tools do you bring?

In Sooty I have one of my two drawers dedicated to carrying tools and spares. It might seem a little excessive to some but after years of 4WDing fulltime as a career, I’ve found this is the only way to be. It’s not just because I drive an old 80 Series, in my 79 the rear under tray drawer is full of tools and spares. I think you have to be completely self sufficient when you head out in the bush. It doesn’t matter if I’m doing a day trip in the Glasshouse or heading to Cape York, what I bring with me never changes. I’m going to go through a few things that I never leave the shed without and hopefully, this can help you to be more prepared…

what keeps you going?

I don’t reckon there is a person out there who hasn’t had their ups and downs. It’s part and parcel of life that we all have our off days. Everyone needs a hobby, and I’m of the opinion that it’s so important to have things in your life to focus on and put your energy towards. This does two things. Firstly it means that your attention is off whatever it is that’s getting you down, but it also acts as an outlet – A chance to only focus on the task in front of you. For me, and I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of 4WDers out there, it’s my vehicle. Some people have called me weird, but my HiLux is so much more than just a car…

12v touring perfection

At first glance, you might think this was just another graphite 79. Yep - it’s a V8. Yep - it’s got that sweet exhaust note. However - this is NOT your ordinary dual cab Cruiser. What you’re looking at is a Cruiser that’s hiding one of the best 12V setups we’ve ever seen! Introducing Matt and his weapon of a VDJ79. Since getting it new in 2016, Matt has turned it into his dream tougher tourer. The list of mods and upgrades on this truck is endless - from front to back she’s been setup to take anywhere Matt wants to go, for as long as he wants to stay there. Let’s take a look at what makes it so specialLook at the stance on this thing. Matt can run…

the dirty diesel epidemic

Dirty fuel isn’t just found at servos in remote parts of the country, it’s absolutely everywhere! Because modern common-rail technology has such fine tolerances, it means it only takes the smallest amount of contamination to completely destroy your fuel system. And that means potentially massive repair costs – sometimes up to $15,000. Ask yourself this, when was the last time you drove past your local service station and it was closed because the tanks were getting cleaned? Us 4WDers pretty much need to accept that dirty fuel is probably something we’ll have to deal with at some point. But that’s not a scary thing if you are prepared in the best possible way. The question is, what do you need to do to ensure you are protected? That’s why we…
