QANTAS GROUP NEWS Qantas says it expects underlying profit before tax (PBT) – which excludes one-off items and which it regards as the best indication of financial performance – for the 12 months to June 30 2018 to be in the range of $1.55 billion and $1.6 billion. If the result is in line with the guidance outlined in a trading update published in early May, it would represent an improvement of between 10 and 14 per cent from underlying PBT of $1.40 billion in 2016/17. “The reason we are doing well today is because the Australian economy is humming on all cylinders,” Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told reporters in Sydney. When I departed Sydney for round two of this year’s Red Bull Air Race World Championship to be held in Cannes, France I was a little nervous about how we would go. It would be the second race with the new team, and new sponsor, though we had a lot going on. Following on from the first race of the series in Abu Dhabi, the aircraft had been flown back to Europe and then trucked to Bruchsal, Germany to the DG factory. Our goal was clear, we were working on ways to reduce the weight and correct a few centre of gravity (CoG) and handling issues. Off the back of a recent trip to Griffith University where I was immersed in the world of its budding aviators, a theme emerged specifically from the female cohort, of which there was about a 20 per cent representation. ‘More than 12,500 prospective candidates have registered their interest.’ It’s probably no surprise Qantas has been deluged by applications from budding young pilots for its planned new flying academy, given its reputation for having highly professional cockpit crew. Now, the hard work begins as it moves to decide where the facility should be. Within weeks of Qantas group chief executive Alan Joyce announcing the airline will set up its own Qantas Group Pilot Academy more than 12,500 prospective candidates have registered their interest in signing up, with some 15 per cent of them being women.
