chris cornell’s previously unheard guns n’ roses cover released

Chris Cornell’s estate has released a surprise studio recording of the late Soundgarden frontman covering Guns N’ Roses’ track “Patience”. The release was produced and mixed by regular collaborator Brendan O’Brien, and coincides with what would have been Cornell’s 56th birthday. Soundgarden supported Gun N’ Roses on the Use Your Illusion tour in the early ’90s, with Axl Rose hailing Cornell as the best rock vocalist at the time. Guns N’ Roses regularly covered Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” in the months following Cornell’s passing on May 18th, 2017. Cornell was working on a covers album with Brendan O’Brien prior to his death. It’s unclear how far along the recordings were, but the appearance of “Patience” could point towards the release of additional tracks from the sessions. The final Soundgarden album, which Cornell was…

orange debuts fs1 mini footswitch for crowded pedalboards

Orange has announced the FS1 Mini Footswitch, designed to take up minimal pedalboard real estate, while still offering the same guitar amp-switching functionality. The metal-cased mini pedal features an orange LED indicator, single footswitch and quarter-inch jack to connect to any Orange amp. It can be used to go between channels on twin-channel amps (eg, the Crush series), turn reverb on and off (Rockerverb and Crush Pro), or to adjust in-built attenuators (Rockerverb and Dual Dark), to name a few functions. In a neat touch, Orange has thrown in 12 stickers with its iconic, erm, icons to match whatever you end up using the footswitch for – there are even three blank stickers thrown in to add your own designs. Keep ’em clean, please.…

seymour duncan unleashes “brutal” six-string wes hauch jupiter humbucker

Seymour Duncan first teamed up with former The Faceless guitarist Wes Hauch in 2019 for the Custom Shop Jupiter Seven-String Rails bridge position pickup. Now the company has unveiled a six-string version of the “brutal” humbucker, available for both neck and bridge positions. The passive rails humbucker set features dual stainless-steel rail poles, a ceramic magnet and a finely tuned high output wind. The result, according to Seymour Duncan, is a pickup pair that “delivers aggressive mid-range attack, evenly balanced string response and focused clarity.”…

TOM MORELLO SURPRISES TENYEAR-OLD ACTIVIST SHREDDER Words: Michael Astley-Brown Earlier this month, ten-year-old Nandi Bushell set the internet ablaze with her performance of Rage Against the Machine’s “Guerrilla Radio” in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Judging by the video’s play count, she won a lot of fans – among them Tom Morello himself, who set out to surprise the UK multi-instrumentalist with a very special gift. The RATM and Audioslave firebrand – who had previously praised Bushell’s performance on Twitter – sent out his just-released signature Fender Soul Power Stratocaster, along with a video message. “I’d like you to have this guitar as a gift from me to you because you rock so great, and to see someone rocking so great who is so young, it really gives me hope for…

SAN MEI SHE IS a fiercely enigmatic indie-pop trailblazer whose overdriven road-trip anthems are at once emphatically eruptive and deliriously dreamy. Mei (by night, or Emily Hamilton by day) revels in a labyrinthine soundscape that sears and swells with emotional tension, just enough restraint in play that she never truly kicks over into grunge territory, but teases a dry, warbly edge. SHE SOUNDS LIKE the future of retro. Mei is a pioneer of the way guitars will exist in a synth-dominated pop world as the decade ahead of us unfolds. YOU’LL DIG HER IF YOU LIKE Metric, Grimes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. With her sharp and spry slithers of musical whimsy, Mei evokes the imagery of late-night journeys through foreign cities, humming neon lights and open-zippered leather jackets, blood-red lipstick and bold,…
