the smart man’s cheat sheet

Do this Go 30° To build a bigger chest, you need to work the angles. Muscle activation in the upper chest is greater when you’re pressing on a bench set at a 30° or 45° incline than on a flat bench, says a study in the European Journal of Sports Science. However, activation of the lower pec muscles is greater on a flat bench and a decline bench, so if you’re looking to build serious chest size, multiple angle lifting is the key to success. Know this Be a fit dad Most parents know that the diet and exercise habits of a pregnant woman impacts the health of the baby, but little is known about how a father’s health choices are passed to his sprogs. A study by US researchers found that lifestyle practices of…

Matthias Walkner, pictured here during the third stage of Rally Du Maroc in Erfoud, Morocco on October 7, 2018, is a study in perseverance. In 2015, the daredevil became the first Austrian rider to take part in the famous Dakar Rally since the legendary Heinz Kinigadner. Sadly, he was forced to retire from the race due to illness, and in 2016 his dreams were dashed again after he sustained an injury. However, Matthias came roaring back in 2017, taking out second place, and in 2018 was finally crowned the Dakar champion. "As long as I’m not in the dust of a rider in front, I enjoy every moment," says the super-fit 32-year-old.…

booking dot yeah?

Up to 81 percent of us think reading reviews is a good idea when making an online hotel booking, but how good are we at judging which reviews are reliable? New research from the UK suggests we’re willing to blindly trust reviews when they conform to our preconceived ideas. The study found we’re subconsciously less likely to question the credibility of a review that fits with our expectations – eg, a bad review for a budget hotel or a good review for a luxury one. It’s only when a review doesn’t align with our expectations – say, a lousy review for a luxury hotel – that we take a more sceptical view on whether we’re being given reliable information. “The brain is biologically wired to feel comfortable when our expectations are confirmed,” says…

Press gang There are lots of ways to target your chest, but few are better at building muscle than a heavy barbell bench press. And when you do that mass-building move, you’re better off using free weights than a Smith machine, according to a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. When the study subjects were asked to perform two reps at 70 per cent and 90 per cent of their one-rep maximum, muscle activation in their pecs and shoulders was greater on the free weights bench than when they used the Smith machine, which uses a fixed bar path. Another benefit of using free weights is they provide more of a challenge to the small stabilising muscles of the shoulder joint, and looking after these will bring…

get bombproof with a bar

If you want to reduce your chances of getting injured, then you need to spend some time in the weights room. Danish researchers who conducted a meta-analysis on 25 studies involving 26,000 participants and 3500 injuries found that strength training can reduce incidence of injury by more than two-thirds – so more time with the bar means less time on the treatment table. One of the best compound barbell moves that you can perform is the deadlift, which works every major muscle group in your body.…

Full of it We’ve all been there – when you’ve already eaten half a pizza and know you should leave the rest for tomorrow (leftover pizza for breakfast is the best), but you just can’t stop yourself from finishing the whole thing. Well, a new study from the University of Michigan, US, has discovered why. They found that there are two tiny clusters of cells in our brains that battle for control of feeding behaviour – and the one that drives eating overpowers the one that says to stop. Researchers also found that the brain’s own natural opioid system gets involved – and that blocking it with Narcan can stop overeating. Push the button Mushrooms are a fantastic food to help “pad out” meals to make them more filling without adding extra calories –…
