just for fun

THOSE TWO BIKES on the cover are a couple of great examples of what’s great about motorcycling: affordable, fun, well-built and offering the simplicity of an engine strung well between two wheels – that’s exactly why we like these contraptions. Sitting on an engine you have to balance is the best kind of fun. More expensive bikes are fun, too – don’t get me wrong. Spending two hours in the shed, changing suspension and engine settings and modes with the dash alone, is an excellent way to spend the hours, and the way electronics can make your ride better, particularly on the track, is excellent. But these two machines, the Yamaha MT-09 and Kawasaki Z900, have all they need to make life fun on two wheels, and to be able to afford it,…

baby tuono emerges

THE TUONO 660 LOOKS LIKE A 2021 MODEL WE RECKON APRILIA could be about to revitalise the mid-capacity nakedbike market. Already the RS660 Supersport has been spotted on test in Europe and now we’ve nabbed images and info on the stripped back Tuono version. When Aprilia unveiled the Tuono 660 as a ‘concept’ at last year’s EICMA show there was never any doubt a production version would follow. Now it has filed design patents revealing only minor styling changes to the concept, which suggests that the Tuono’s journey to showrooms is well underway. To recap, the Tuono 660 is based on the bones of the Aprilia RS660, which followed the same pattern; appearing as a concept bike at 2018’s EICMA show and in production form at the 2019 event. It’s set to reach…

covid kills amcn winter jacket drive

THIS IS THE time of the year we traditionally launch our annual AMCN Winter Jacket Drive. It takes a huge amount of organisation and involves Mission Australia and some of the nation’s major motorcycle-related businesses coming together to help the nation’s needy. This year it took on even more significance, as the Covid-19 pandemic has triggered an economic crisis to match the last three months of the health crisis. Several big-name motorcycle operations stepped up to the plate, promising to make this year’s Jacket Drive a special event. Sadly, just as it was all coming together, we were informed that social distancing restrictions and other health regulations that apply to Covid-19 made it impossible to comply with restrictions in delivery of the jackets. We’re really disappointed by this situation but are determined to…

sports supplement

THIS IS THE first picture of the new Benelli 600RR Supersport and comes via an official type-approval document filed with Chinese authorities and styling is bang up to date without being a slavish copy of its rivals. Although it’s badged ‘Q600 SRG’ and wears QJiang logos, it is sure to be sold under the Benelli name in most other countries. While it shares its chassis and engine with the naked 600cc model (see seperate breakout) and is an evolution of the existing Benelli TNT600i the big news is the level of high-end components. These include Brembo brakes fitted with Bosch’s 9.1MB ABS. The engine meets the latest Chinese emissions standards, which roughly match European levels. We’ve also sourced a low-resolution image of Benelli’s upcoming Imperiale 530 cruiser. The engine, based on the air-cooled, single-cylinder 373.5cc…

benelli’s global expansion plan

IT FEELS LIKE Chinese-owned Benelli has more new models on the go at present than the rest of the industry combined and it’s all part of a worldwide expansion plan. Here’s the finished version of the new 100kW 1209cc tourer, long before you’re meant to see it. We’ve also got the full Monty on its new 800cc Adventure and both naked and fully-faired 600cc models. Four years in the making, Benelli’s forthcoming 1200 tourer is finally edging towards production as these leaked photographs prove. What’s more, they show that far from being a cheap-and-cheerful machine using recycled elements of older Benellis, the new model – codenamed BJ1200 – offers groundbreaking new technology. An unusual cut-out in the bodywork under the headlight is matched by a similar fitting above the tail light. These appear to be…

next-gen mid-size naked

HERE’S THE BN600 successor, the naked version of the incoming supersport machine. Under the new bodywork, which we’ve already seen in spy shots and patent images, the chassis and engine are carried over from the old TNT600i. The motor is tweaked for better emissions and a claimed five percent improvement in performance, although, type approval documents confirm the engine produces 60kW, the same as its predecessor. It has the same impressive componentry as its supersport sibling. Electronics have also revealed the bike’s future as a Benelli. Spy video of the bike in China showed that the new 5in TFT display has a ‘Benelli’ splash screen when the keyless ignition is turned on via a button below the bars. At the same time, multi-coloured RGB lighting cycles behind both the ignition button and…
