FOCUS Racing takes focus. Whether it’s getting your wheels in the exact right space, watching your competitors, the start gate or the gap between trees. Focus is at the core of racing. Danni Beecroft on the hunt in the Pumptrack at Crankworx Rotorua. Riders get one track walk and one practice run at the EWS. Down at Blue Derby the track walks and practice were always a real mix of laughs, fun and focus. It just depended who was around at the time.…

the beating heart of mtb

Rewind to 10 or probably 20 years ago and mountain biking was about racing. You met other mountain bikers at a club race, and found new trails when you went a little further to do a race that another club held. It’s a triumph for mountain biking that our sport is now a legitimate leisure sport. Mountain bikers are even used in TV commercials to sell cars and mobile phone plans! We have local councils and state governments spending millions of dollars on making trails for us to ride (for free), and access to information about mountain biking is everywhere. In fact it is hard to avoid as it permeates every aspect of social media. Many say racing is dead, but here at AMB we think racing still drives a lot…

blair and beck triumph in alice springs

The Outback Cycling Easter in the Alice was a ready-made Easter break for 160 keen mountain bikers. With 3-days of mountain bike racing across the Easter long weekend, the event attracted riders from just about every corner of Australia for its 7th edition. There were some small changes compared to previous editions, notably the long-distance opening stage was dropped. As it was no longer a round of the MTBA XCM Series, the need for a long, 90km (or more) stage under the Northern Territory sun was no longer deemed necessary. Instead, riders tackled a 40km stage on a route that cherry picked the finest hand cut trails in and around Alice Springs. With two shorter stages over the coming days, and a short course invitational event for the top riders, all…

get set for reef to reef in 2019!

One of our favourite events in 2018 was the inaugural Reef to Reef MTB event. At first you’d be forgiven for thinking the event would be a mix of the RRR (Rural, Rainforest, Reef) point to point mountain bike race and either the Cape to Cape or Port to Port. But Reef to Reef had its own character – not uncommon for anything in Tropical North Queensland. In 2019 the course remains mostly the same but with a few changes. This is probably the most diverse 4-day mountain bike event in Australia, aided by the location and of course good course planning. Stage 1 stays as a time trial at Smithfield MTB Park behind James Cook University. The course drops to 18km and 740m of climbing. While Smithfield has been the…

winter is coming

Winter is coming, and it’s no reason to stop riding your bike! Of course for some of our country winter might even be the best riding season. f you're north of the Tweed or in the Red Centre , winter is a great break from high humidity or scorching heat. But no matter where you are , a trip to the trails before work or a big day out in cold and blustery conditions are a whole lot more comfortable with the right gear. Some of these items are just the ticket to make you and your bike more comfortable this winter. 1. ENDURA MT500 Nothing is more miserable than a wet and cold bum on a winter ride. The Endura MT500 shorts are hard - wear wearing and waterproof . I…
