PRETTY OLD THINGS
One of the many perks – or curses, depending on how you choose to look at it – of telling people you’re a photography magazine editor is being gifted unwanted photography gear. During the years I’ve received old films, memory cards, film scanning equipment, tripods, lenses and a bunch of old cameras from all sorts of people. And, although much of it has made its way onto the shelf behind my desk, plenty of it has also ended up in that grey area of things we hang onto that every photographer can appreciate: the too-good-to-throw-out, not-worth-enough-to-sell pile in the back of the cupboard. Just before Christmas, my wife’s uncle visited and brought with him a bunch of his old camera gear that he had been collecting inside a bulging plastic bag.…
