editor’s note

G day All, Well the warm weather sure did it’s dash well into late May this year, but the southerly winds and cold front have certainly hit, leaving the white stuff in the higher areas of the country (good time to go North). The beanie has been pulled out and the sheepskin Drizabone vest is now starting its winter wear. I love the cold time of the year, but it keeps everyone inside for longer, however after gaining access to a block in The Blue Mountains not long ago, I know where I’ll be driving to when I can. Being off work for the past 8weeks with ligament damage to my right foot, I’ve been in a depressed state hanging round the house, as I haven’t been able to do anything…

mountain monster

We went out hunting deer in the hills for our Anzac week hunting trip with my young son George. We had been sleeping on the ground in swags and after the fourth day, we were tired, sore and ready to give up. George convinced me 'not to quit’ and go another night, but it had been hard work hiking the steep hills. I felt like an old man, but was lifted by my seven year old’s enthusiasm! We changed properties to another farmer and found out that a big boar had been evading the local pig doggers. We went on foot with our .308 looking for deer and found a good cliff top over a lush creek right on sunset. We spotted some does and a rutting fallow buck, so we…

speargrass, bogs & boars

Like a trio of frustrated, weather beaten hedgehogs, Keegan, Matt and I peppered with countless sharp pointed seeds gritted our teeth and kept our heads down. It was hard to believe we were on the main track as the front of the mighty Honda Pioneer side-by-side flattened a narrow path through a thick wall of speargrass. In sections, the perennial grass was over ten feet tall as we made a beeline towards the river. Once we’d finally cleared the speargrass, the terrain changed dramatically to large expanses of floodplain. As we slowly skirted the well-used edges of the watermark, the abundant fresh pig sign lifted the anticipation levels in the Honda’s front seat and that of our four-legged mates in the dogbox. Today, taking charge of the canine cavalry was the sometimes…

gps tracker review

The paper-thin snowflakes fell from the sky and the light breeze pierced the upper body as I stood whistling and calling out to my dog Jeep, who was off scenting a boar he smelt an hour earlier. My bitch had come back, but she was only a short-range finder. On the other hand, my pack leader was missing and I was starting to stress as I knew the type of hilly country we were in, was unforgiving. I got a fire going and had a feed while calling and whistling continuously. These were the years before technology took over and made it easier for pig hunters to find their hounds on the hunt. Jeep arrived four hours later busted up and hobbling and my voicebox was stuffed. What a relief seeing…
