inspiring rides

IT’S BEEN TRULY INSPIRING TO SEE THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES track cycling, with so many riders from the Australian contingent performing strongly. The Australian cycling team came away with 14 gold, three silver and six bronze medals, the results of years of hard work and intensive training at the hands of elite coaching staff, some tough introspection and the will to rebuild. So well done to the reinvigorated team of riders and staff and their leader of only a year’s tenure, Simon Jones. kathleen shannon

KATHLEEN ANN SHANNON (Bazzano) was born on 20 September 1964. As a teenager she was drawn to cycling as a way of staying fit, before being encouraged into club competition by her father, a former professional rider. As quickly became apparent, Shannon was rather good herself, and within a year she’d been selected for her first NSW State squad while completing her secondary studies at Catherine McCauley Catholic girls school in Sydney. Upon finishing high school in 1981, Shannon then spent the next decade carving out a career as one of the trailblazers of elite women’s road cycling in Australia. The first glimpses of Shannon’s rich potential came in 1983 and 1984, when she claimed consecutive silver medals in the elitewomen’sNationalRoadRace. Then in 1985 she went one better, becoming National Champion…
