Looking out from the beach or a headland into the giant, blue expanse of the ocean has always thrilled me. It's the enormity of it that is so captivating, a powerful mass that is simultaneously enticing and terrifying. As a child the beach was always my happy place. Many glorious summer days were spent making sand castles, body surfing until getting unceremoniously dumped by the waves and searching the rocks for 'creatures'. Not much has changed, except now the ocean is truly my playground. I've explored its depths, inhabitants and shipwrecks as a scuba diver in Egypt (pictured above on the SS Thistlegorm, sunk in 1941), New Zealand, Guam, Hawaii and Galapagos Islands among others. Here in Australia I've seen the coastlines of Victoria, Sydney, South West Rocks and the Ningaloo Reef…

kokoda owners gather in barossa valley

Following a successful inaugural national gathering of Kokoda caravan owners last year, the second annual event is set to be held at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, about an hour north of Adelaide. Sunday, October 21 will see the start of five days of fun for almost 200 members of the Facebook group. Last year, the inaugural National Gathering was a huge success in Lightning Ridge, NSW, with 160 caravanners travelling in 78 Kokoda vans contributing more than $100,000 to the town. They took this great aerial photo by drone of members spelling out 'Kokoda' on the ground. This year, Kokoda Ambassadors and driving forces behind the gathering, Vicki and Glenn Bryant, have arranged commemorative T-shirts, wine tours, foodie tours for non-wine drinkers and a fun day in the caravan park with guest…

passing of industry pioneer gordon smillie

The Caravan Industry Association Victoria notes the passing of Gordon Smillie, an icon of the industry, who passed away in his sleep recently. He was passionate, popular and a widely respected gentleman. Gordon began his career with Underwriting & Insurance) in 1956; in 1962, he founded what is now Australia’s largest caravan insurer CIL Insurance. The story goes that Gordon was having a beer at a pub one day, when a local caravan dealer told him in no uncertain terms how unreasonable he thought it was that no one insured caravans. Gordon had to agree, and that’s how CIL Insurance came to be. Back in the early 1970s the popular Scotsman promoted caravanning and safety through educational films with TV stars including Bert Newton (pictured here with Gordon and Patty Newton) and…
