For part of the main route skirting our island, the Bruce Highway is pretty ordinary in parts. We have recently done the trip up and back to Bowen and you need to be on your game towing a van. Hitting some sections north of Marlborough at speed is a real white knuckle experience as the tow vehicle and van bounce alarmingly over the waves of bitumen. So, along with the need to avoid the many trucks and animals, by the end of a day's drive, a campsite is a welcome relief. It's a good thing there are ample roadside rest areas and some very pretty caravan parks and beachside destinations along the way.
