I typically avoid structures in my images, but Reine is a location that seems as if it was made for the camera Reed Miller Image title: The Lofotens in Cloud What camera, lens and settings did you use to capture this stunning shot? Canon EOS 5DS R, 12mm, 1/160sec, f/8, ISO 200. How did you decide on the composition for this shot? I can’t imagine a more picturesque location, and it was one of the reasons that I wanted to travel to the Lofotens in Norway. I spent hours trying to get the image I wanted. What do you like most about the image? The scenery is breathtaking, but I found Norway to be highly unique in that its buildings lend to the scene instead of detracting from the image. Did you do much post-processing? This is a three-image bracketed…

story behind the still

Photographer’s name: Petr Polách Website: polachpetr.cz/en Image location: Yucatán, Mexico Type of commission: Personal Shot details: Sony ILCE-7RM2, FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS, 1/80sec, f/9, ISO 3200 About the shot: Underwater photography is in many ways the definition of a niche genre. It is amazing how much of an adjustment is required when shooting in this unfamiliar medium. A special set of skills are required to work effectively in aquatic environments – both practical and technical. For this shot, Petr Polách needed to call on all his photographic expertise. “This image was taken while diving in the cave system in Yucatán, Mexico, specifically in the flooded cave Dream Gate’s downstream section,” explains Petr. “Flooded caves are characterised by an unfavourable situation for a photographer – absolute darkness. The solution is to use external underwater flashes. For…

After working through all the brilliant entries, the winners have been selected. Both crowd-voted and expert winners will win a licence to Affinity Photo professional editing software. Congratulations to all of the winners – as usual the standard of submitted images was incredibly high, and it was a joy to look through them all. 1 ST PLACE WINNER Val Di Funes Photographer: Andrew Robertson Our comment: This image has stunning sharpness from the foreground to the distant mountains and is dripping with a late summer Alpine feel. The gorgeous light highlights the texture and colour of the landscape, while the contrast has been expertly managed, providing a harsh summer atmosphere, while maintaining tonal detail. Very…
