WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER 2018 issue of Digital SLR Photography. Having heard that the planet Mars is closer to the Earth than it has been for years, I spent many late evenings last month in the garden, sipping a beer and gazing up at the bright red orb slowly moving across the night sky. I’ve always been fascinated by outer space and hope in the near future to find the time (and funds) to try my hand at astrophotography. THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY Greenwich is not only the home of the Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian, it's host to one of the world's most spectacular photography competitions. Now in its tenth year, the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018 is led by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, sponsored by Insight Investment and run in association with BBC Sky at Night magazine. The latest contest attracted over 4,200 entries from enthusiastic amateurs and professional photographers spanning 91 countries. The 13th annual Kennel Club's Dog Photographer of the Year competition has revealed yet more adorable images of our canine friends. Sponsored by SmugMug and nikon School, the competition comprises ten categories, including Portrait, Man’s Best Friend, Dogs at Play and Puppy. the competition is extremely popular, with almost 10,000 submissions from over 70 countries. Monica van der Maden from the netherlands was judged as the overall winner with her image of noa the Great Dane seemingly alone in a forest, which placed first in the Oldies category.
