welcome

WELCOME TO THE JANUARY 2019 issue of Digital SLR Photography. It might be dark, damp and cold outside, but that’s no excuse to score ‘landscapes’ off your to-shoot list this month. While it would be nice if there was a little more warmth in the air, don’t let the cold put you off heading outdoors. Sunrise and sunsets happen at more sociable hours, while the lack of people wandering around means that you have locations mostly to yourself. In this issue, our Beginner’s Guide (page 58) provides you with all the essential advice you need to get started taking great landscapes, from the best choice of kit to core techniques you need to master. Elsewhere in the issue, you’ll discover further advice and inspiration in our reader workshop (page 72)…

Dawn Over The River Tay by Neil Barr WWW.NEILBARR.CO.UK “This is Kinnoull Tower and the River Tay at sunrise, as seen from Kinnoull Hill, in Perth. I was working at the nearby Scottish Game Fair selling my work and decided to get up early one morning to visit this location. I had been here before, so knew the spot well, but this time I wanted to get a shot with more of the green foliage and catch some nice side-light as the sun rose behind the hills.” Canon EOS 6D with EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens. Exposure: 1/6sec at f/11 (ISO 50). Eilean Donan in Blue by Neil Barr WWW.NEILBARR.CO.UK (Right) “Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie, Loch Alsh, and in the far distance, the Skye Bridge. looking a lot like christmas

CAMERA: NIKON D750 / LENS: SIGMA 35MM F/1.4 IT’S NEARING THAT time again when the trees and wreaths go up, presents get bought and cards get written. If you’re a family who enjoys photography, the annual festive photo is probably a tradition – if not of your whole family then of the children. Some people schedule a slot with a professional photographer but if you want to try it for yourself, you needn’t much equipment. You can of course improve the quality by using multiple studio lights and a studio background, but you can also get decent images with just a white sheet, some ‘fairy lights’ and a diffused flashgun. These days you don’t need to design your own Christmas cards in Photoshop, you can use one of the many online printers…
