welcome

At Gardening Australia magazine, May means roses. It’s the start of the bare-rooted season, and there are always delicious new roses coming onto the market, as well as old beauties to hunt down and add to the garden. Orange flowers with a red tinge cover the ferny foliage of the low-growing, compact sub-shrub, Bidens ferulifolia ‘Campfire’. Bred to have large blooms, this perennial is both tough and pretty, with abundant flowers from autumn right through winter and into spring. It prefers full sun but will also tolerate semi-shade. Plants grow 20–25cm high and wide, making them ideal for hanging baskets, pots and low borders. aussiewinners.com.au Lovers of blue flowers will enjoy the new penstemon Blue of Zurich (Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Züriblau’). Foxglove-like bells of gentian blue, with pink at the base, adorn steep spikes above the narrow leaves. A favourite with butterflies and bees, this summer-flowering perennial grows 30–50cm high, and prefers full sun or semi-shade, along with good drainage. tesselaar.net.au Did you know…
