Most gardeners can claim guilt for harming an indoor plant at some time. Nothing sinister, of course, just your regular inadvertent neglect or excessive pampering. I’ve certainly had my share of house-plant horrors, and while it’s all part of learning to grow things, the reasons for a lacklustre performance can often be a mystery. In this special potted-garden issue, we’ve asked one of our trusty plant practitioners, Jennifer Stackhouse, to diagnose a number of common cases and advise carers on how to nurse their sick house plants back to good health. Check out the results of her consultations, starting on page 34. Do you need more space to grow your favourite fruits? Josh Byrne offers expert guidance for growing dwarf varieties in containers on page 44. We have three fabulous potted projects,…

The creamy white Winx rose has recently been released by Knight’s Roses. White roses represent remembrance, and this beauty has been bred to honour the retired Australian thoroughbred champion, Winx, officially ranked as one of the world’s best racehorses. Winx is a shrub rose with deep green foliage and pristine rosette-shaped flowers that hold more than 60 petals per bloom. It makes an outstanding selection for containers, hedging, bedding and borders. The long-lasting blooms have a violet and clove fragrance, and team perfectly with any colour scheme. It works well to interplant them with garden favourites such as catmint (Nepeta ‘Walkers Blue’) or Lavandula ‘Avonview’ – the grey-blue leaves and lavender-blue flowers of these plants go beautifully with the white rose. Winx has a bushy habit and grows to 1.2m…

BRILLIANT GREEN THE SURPRISING HISTORY AND SCIENCE OF PLANT INTELLIGENCE Stefano Mancuso & Alessandra Viola Island Press The term ‘plant intelligence’ refers to a relatively new arm of science. Its basic premise, according to this fascinating paperback, is that plants are beings “capable of calculation and choice, learning and memory”. The book looks at the long history of plants, examining such aspects as their senses – the same five as us, plus 15 more – sleep patterns, sex lives and how they communicate. Written in a lively, accessible way, Brilliant Green will appeal to anyone who loves plants… and isn’t that all of us? A TREE IN THE HOUSE FLOWERS FOR YOUR HOME, SPECIAL OCCASIONS AND EVERY DAY Annabelle Hickson Hardie Grant Books At heart, this is a book about flower arranging, but it encompasses so much…

If you like neat edges around your garden beds, EverEdge Cor-Ten steel edging will help you keep lawn grass where it belongs. Made from 90 per cent recycled steel, the edging weathers to a rust finish in five weeks. This protects the steel underneath while creating a rustic look. It comes in 1m lengths that interlock and can be bent into curves, with spikes incorporated for easy installation. The edging won’t crack, rot or be eaten by termites, and isn’t damaged by whipper snippers. The 1.6mm-thick lengths of edging come in depths of 75mm for lawns and 100mm or 125mm for vegetable or other garden beds.
