For this year’s annual ‘Big Style’ issue, it made sense to have a music theme. All my childhood style icons are musicians. And it seems I’m not alone, either – a quick survey of the office raised mentions of Dean Martin, Gary Numan, Paul Weller, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, (Kate Moss era) Pete Doherty, Debbie Harry, Courtney Love, Kid Cudi and the sound techie in Womack & Womack’s ‘Teardrops’ video. To each their own. But when you pose a question, are you obliged to answer it? Because Enrique Iglesias was once a style icon of mine. Anyway, not to discount the influence such icons have had on our life and style, for this issue we were keen to focus on who’s setting the style agenda of tomorrow.…

ANGELA HO ILLUSTRATOR Thoughts on Silicon Valley after illustrating the story – all hype or are we really doomed? I don’t think it’s hype when 200 elections around the world were affected by Cambridge Analytica using Facebook data. Silicon Valley seems to have too much power to influence societies and after reading the article I think governments need to form policies to diminish this power. What aspect of the story did you find most alarming? That Peter Thiel injects the blood of teenagers. You’re currently based in Hong Kong – what do you miss most about Australia? Currently not being tear-gassed or moving around a city without the threat of unwarranted police violence. Hong Kong has been going through societal chaos since early June; I miss the relative freedoms of Australia and democratic process. You’ve…

dan rookwood asks have you got grit?

Six months ago, I was lost in the midst of the worst crisis of my career. Nearly a year into a new job at a new company in a new city – and I was hating all three. Out of my comfort zone, out of my depth, my confidence hit rock bottom. When my boss found out I was on the verge of quitting, her response wasn’t the sympathetic arm-around-the-shoulder I might have anticipated. “Huh,” she shrugged insouciantly. “Thought you had more grit.” Those words have echoed through my head ever since. No one had ever accused me of lacking grit before, but maybe she was right. So I had to prove her wrong. Although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, in retrospect this was just the pep talk I…
